Wireless questions.

Need help on deciding which wireless router to get for my home. Someone recommended this one.
I will be placing the cable modem and wireless router in a seperate room from the desktop pc. Distance will be under 20 ft.
How are Dlink products in general? I just want to make sure I will not suffer any speed loss whatsoever.

Please offer any suggestions/recommendations.

Also, what exactly is the Access Point?

It really boils down to price and support. I hate Linksys' support but I still buy from them. If I were buying now, I would get one of the 22mpbs models.

I have success with Netgear, SMC, some Linksys. I think the Dlink would be fine, especially at that distance. I have both Netgear and Linksys wireless in my house and going outside, the Linksys is stronger.

As for speed, I do not enable WEP, which is Wireless Equivalency Protection, which usually slows throughput and that is the biggest variation among brands.

An access point functions as a connection from your wireless device to your wired network or to your internet connection, if no wired network exists.

Find the best price for a 22mbps like Dlink and enjoy.

I checked wqith lynksys and tehy told me they don't have a 22mbps product as of yet. Do you have any liks?

I have used SMC before and really liked them. I have thought that dlink was pretty inexpensive stuff in the past.

Also I would like for the desktop to be USB rather than a PCI card.

Any other suggestions?

Sorry, Linksys does not have it. I installed a 22mbps unit for a friend and like its configuration menus.

It would be a good choice. Orinoco is tops for desktop USB, not sure if they have 22mpbs.

I'm currently running the D-Link Wireless Airplus Access Point (not Router), PCMCIA Card, and PCI Card. They are ok, but the range seems to be less than my brothers Orinoco within the same house. Short distances are fine, but when I'm on the 2nd floor and my AP is in the basement, the signal strength drops into the 60-65% range and the PCI card tends to get a less consistent connection than the PCMCIA card, sometimes dropping altogether for several seconds.

Also, I've NEVER achieved the 22 mbps speed (whatever that would translate into in actual speed) no matter how close I was to the AP and with a 100% signal. I think the most I've gotten is around 7.5 mbps download, which sounds about right for their enhanced 11 mbps mode.
