Wireless Router obsolete in presence of Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI??

My question is, I have recenelty purchased an Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI edition for $120 but I am unsure whether the WIFI will be of any benefit to me and whether I will actaully use it.

I do not have a laptop and nor does anyone in the house. However, we do have 3 personal computers all sharing the internet using a Linksys Wireless Router that works fine.

Is the WIFI preferred by people simply because it allows easy connection to the network for laptops because would the router not provide the same functionality?

If the WIFI performs as well as my current router in the same functional capacity, should I just ditch the router and just use the WIFI acting as a sort of built-in router?

As you can see, I am absolutely clueless when it comes to wireless networks.

Any advice, tidbits of information would be much appreciated!

You are using your Linksys router as a switch, and not as a wireless router since all your computers have no wireless cards, except the Asus P5b- DL with wifi.

The Asus wifi does not replace your router, it's a wireless card allowing you to connect to your router and share files, internet ...

Hard ethernet is, most of the time faster than wifi.

If you have a laptop then wireless will be more convenient not better than ethernet.

The Asus board's built-in WiFi is to allow it to connect to a WiFi router such as the one you already have. Not to replace it.

Ok, that clarified everything for me. Thanks!
I guess the WIFI is basically for laptops to connect to it so that it can use the internet that the asus p5b deluxe provides?

WIFI is for anything that need wireless connection.. a laptop, a desktop,...

that simply means that you don't need to buy a wireless network card as it is provided with the motherboard. at the end, it will work just like your laptop

Other machines cannot connect to the Asus p5b, The P5b can only connect to a wireless router that is it. A laptop cannot connect to a p5b, why would it ? the p5b does not have a direct connection to the internet, your router does.

Laptops or desktops can use wireless, it allows mobility and lack of having to run wires through your house

The router connects to the internet and allows you to create more connections in your home. Those connections can be desktop or laptops, wireless or hard wired, any combination

Basically, my WIFI is useless because currently I have a wireless router with wireless network cards on all the computers in my house. If I didn't have wireless network cards on every single computer connected to the wireless router, the WIFI would prove to be what connects everything to my computer (with the Asus P5B Deluxe WIFI ap)?

LOL. This is a good one.

Everyone is right (i think).

So your p5b has a wireless adapter which allows you to connect wirelessly to your router just like your other computers.

**note, anything beyond this is speculation**

You ALSO do have the ability to setup your wireless adapter on the p5b as an access point hence its a Wifi/AP edition of the board.

How do you set this up? I'm not sure but it can be setup so that other WIRELESS devices can receive internet through your p5b which would render your wireless router useless as you said. I'm sure it involves directly connecting from your modem (cable / dsl) directly to the P5B and then configuring it.

**end speculation**

It's a solution looking for a problem. Just because you have it doesn't mean that you have to use it. Motherboards have a long history of piling on features as means for differentiation and hopefully sales, leading to a lot of confusion, different versions in the field, etc.

The OP has a wireless router, and apparently isn't even using its wireless functionality. Now he has a motherboard which can also function as a wireless AP, and wonders -- "do I really need the router now, can I ditch it and use the new motherboard's feature instead"?

The answer is "maybe". But why would you do that? You would probably not gain anything, and would probably take a bigger risk by having your desktop work as a router too -- it would move to the front line of your internet defense, instead of being protected by a hardware firewall handling that role. You'd also have to have that desktop switched on all the time so that other computers could access the net, and any reboot / etc., would interfere with them.

Do what anyone should do when they have a device with wireless capability that they don't need -- disable the wireless, and forget about it until you have an actual want for wireless, and even then avoid wireless where you can -- wired is always better. Wireless is only useful when you want to avoid the physical connections.

The Asus WIFI is a wireless network card, period.

All it means is you don't need a third party wireless card to connect to your router, it's included with the motherboard.

It's not a router, or a connection point for other computers, it's a wireless network card.
Got it?

And for an overclocker or performance tweaker who buys this board, how likely are they to go wireless vs wired to use their system?

Slim to none.

Ok, that gave me a lot of insight as to what its advantages actually were. I wasn't planning on using the WIFI on the motherboard.
I am using my wireless router so I don't exactly know what you mean by me not using its wireless functionality since I do have 2 other computers connected to the router via wireless.

Thanks for the responses though. Really helped

Sorry, just a bad guess. Cheers.
