ok i need help finding a good quality good priced wirless router to share the cable internet connection with my new pc im building, what would you suggest?

me i have so far narrowed it down to these 2

I've been using wireless for @ 3 years but have always used Linksys or NetGear. The incompatibilities between brands is mostly a thing of the past. As long as you get "G" gear (most people do) everything should play nice together. I have found, that when setting-up a new system, everything goes smoother if you plug directly into the router for "the mating".

Get a Linksys WRT54GS. Great wireless router. Then go over and visit JackMDS's site, he has some really excellent tutorials on networking, especially on wireless. I have had extremely good luck with this particular Linksys router. The SpeedBooster PCI cards from Linksys are a great match. My laptop, with internal wireless, has no problems with it either, as well as several other computers on mine and another network using this router.

If you haven't already purcahsed, I too think the LINKSYS WRT54GS is a great choice.

except the dlink goes up to 108 mbp/s and the linkyes only goes up to 58mbp/s

The dLink will only do that when talking to compatible dLink wireless adapters on the clients, and then only when conditions are right. In general, if you are not going to be doing a lot of file transfers between machines, then you don't need to worry about the speed of the wireless connection. On it's worst day it will still likely be much faster than your Internet connection.

You can get the Linksys with speedbooster for 108 speeds if you want, but it costs more. Do plan to be transferrring extremely large files across your network often? If so, then the faster one migh be a good idea. If not, a 54 Mbps is quite sufficient.

Just so you know, it has no effect on you internet connection speed. That is capped by your ISP. The 54/108 is the theroitcial max speed of files transferred between computers in your home network.

oh ok i didnt know that, ill probley wont transfer big files from pc to 2nd pc ill only do songs so the 54mbp/s is the best option? even know i have cable internet it wont effect sharing internet speeds?

Hmmm... Inaccurate Linksys does not rate the Speedbooster.

In reallity it is about 70Mb/sec.

Huh, I didn't realize that. I was thinking that using speedbooster allowed them to reach 108.

Either way though, even a Wireless B router (11 Mbps) is sufficient for most people.

If you have only one computer, it is a mistake to go Wireless only, since if the Wireless stop working you cannot connect to the Router to fix it.

You can get the Router with PCMCIA Card for $47 after rebate

Neither one...

1. ADSL2 will be available at the same rate as ADSL next year, even from Telstra...so you want an ADSL2 modem
2. The best signal strength and speed (in Oz) come from the Netgear Rangemax line.
3. DLink customer service in Oz is terrible
4. The Netgear will last longer and can be upgraded to 108Mbps

The Netgear RangeMax DG834PN ADSL2+ is the best choice right now in Oz

Either the WPN111 or the WPN311 (these are USB or PCI versions of the RangeMax).

Yes, the Dlink is cheaper...but the difference in both connection and throughput is well worth it. But since you don't need a modem, get the WPN824...

also that router is long range i only want a short range one my room is onlt 5 meters from the main computer upstairs so, doesnt need to have such a long range, i dont want my neighbours using our internet lol

Exactly...for a spec sheet as to why it's better, look here.

As to long range and short range, that's why you use encryption or WEP when you set it up. It keeps everyone else off of your connection...
