Need a new Router for the family, two kids who game and we have fios 100/100 and they play alot of ps4 wih lag. I see some of the Archers are decently priced, the x6 netgear is overkill imo, but money isnt the object here as it would be a corporate expense.
Are buffalo Routers still good? Back in the day that router with tomato flashed was the best. What do you all recommend?

My preference? Something running pfsense for a firewall and dhcp server. Then an Ubiquiti Access Point as your wifi delivery.

How big is your house? Where does your current wireless fail you? Your PS4 is still going to see lag if you are having wifi placement issues. Wired > wireless for competitive gaming.

If you fios, you should also have the verizon router which should give you wifi. What is deficient in the isp equipment that you would like to improve on?

That is inaccurate. I have fios and do not have a verizon router. He could have whatever he wants. OP really shoudl specify his issues, his current issues, what he wants to solve, and his budget.

Should I get something that has I can flash tomato? I want to increase speed and reliability. I am 100 down and a 100 up, and was actually thinking of attaching straight to otn in the garge

It is 2020 - Buffallo is long time ago "passe". Tomato mainly adds functions. Not Speed.

What is important is:
How big is your house? Where does your current wireless fail you? Your PS4 is still going to see lag if you are having wifi placement issues. Wired > wireless for competitive gaming.

It's good to see the same questions get posted with very little context, haha.

No reason to use tomato. Do you want something plug and play, or do you want something that is more customizable? Do you need a Verizon capable router so you can keep your TV functioning?

If you are going to plug into your garage, and you are using an all in one router/wifi combo, I imagine that's not central? You might consider an extender run over ethernet, those mesh network combos are meh at best IMO. They're only a last resort if you cannot run Ethernet to a second access point. We need more details of your house to help recommend something. Is there ethernet run anywhere, is it a possibility to get it run?
