Hello,

First post... new here and in need of some expert advice

I am staying at a hotel for the next 6-9 months, it has wireless, no hard wired connection.

I am in need of establishing a hard wired connection for my job(it requires hard wired)

What can I do to estalish a hard wired connection, besides finding a hotel that offers hard wired connection?

I am using Guest Tek offered by the hotel as the host and they offer upgrades to higher speeds, this is why I I choice this hotel, to later find out it does not offer hard wired..

I have a desktop computer I need to connect, that does not allow for wireless. If I try to connect without a hard wired connection it wil not allow me to connect.

Thanks for your responses

Hope I do not have to MOVE

Get a stand alone Wireless Bridge it will connect to the hotel's Wireless and can be plugged with a cat6 cable to your computer's LAN port.

Example - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...irtualParent=1

P.S. It is called Wireless N Gaming Adapter because many people use it of x-box. In reality it is regular Client Wireless Bridge that can be use for any computer connection

Is it just because you lack a wireless card in the PC? If so, go with Jack's suggestion.

If, however, you need the SECURITY of a true hard-wired connection, then I suggest moving. If your work involves govt secrets of any type, then transmitting them over wireless is a mistake. Even if you use the current highest encryption standard for wireless, WPA2-PSK/AES-128, someone could still sniff and record your traffic, and 8-10 years later when computers get more powerful, they could break the encryption and then everything you transmitted would be plain to see.

Assuming the hotel has cable or telephone you may be able to just get a DSL/cable internet account and hard wire to the modem. I am going to bet your requirement of no wireless is for security so using a reverse wireless device to move from wireless to wired is not abiding by that requirement, however that can be done if the IT department determine that meets the requirements. Usually when I hear something like that it means your comapny contracts for military/DOD and that does NOT meet their requirements, so keep this in mind.

Were you being a little sarcastic about the 8-10 years later?

Pretty sure it would take 7-8 gpu's like, a day or two at most right now at 128 bit aes??? assuming 64 character alphanum high entropy

Well WPA uses AES256. It also cycles out the password. So even if you managed to crack the key that was used at that moment, it is useless since the keys have already swapped out. Add in the AP salt, and the 16,388 sha1 hash cycles, you end up with a fairly secure system. Even 12 digit number is good for around 3-5 years even in the most powerful GPU based systems. Add in a letter and it is extends to thousands of years.

Could I bring in a reputable internet company to hard wire my hotel room and then bill me????

The reason I do not wish to move is that the hotel rate is amazing for me and meets my needs, well, except for the hard wired part.....was told they had hard wired and got here and they pulled all hard wired equipment..

I do have to have a secure connection as the data is confdental

Thanks

Check with the front desk and ask if they have a wireless adapter (bridge) that you could use. Many wifi-only hotels will have this available, though usually not discount hotels.

Keep in mind that this will not make it secure. In fact, many hotels' wired connections are still all sharing a common LAN, and are not secure. I travel for a living, and you wouldn't believe the data I've seen being shared. SSNs, bank info, passwords, you name it. It frightens me to think what would happen when a less honest person sees the same info!

Does your cellphone include tethering? That might be the simplest (and more secure) way to do it, as many phones will allow you to do it over USB.

The data is confidential and your accessing this through a hotel system? I hope your using vpn. I really don't see why your not able to connect via wifi vs hard wired. Have you actually tried connnecting in with the software via wifi and see if it works ok? If not, just get a wireless ethernet bridge or a cradlepoint that can do wireless as wan and use that.

If they're using a proper VPN tunnel, the medium of the internet connection itself is pointless. That's the point of vpn as it routes all traffic through an encrypted connection to the vpn endpoint and all traffic routes through that.

This. Advise OP to either dial into his workplace through VPN or subscribe to a commercial VPN service if that isn't an option, will make the issue of wireless vs wired irrelevant.

That would depend on the hotel policies. And the systems [phone/cable] in place in that area.

You can argue that with their IT teams, not me, I just install the cable internet for them daily in a navy town with 3 bases with 30 minutes of where I live. .

They don't even want me installing all in ones and turning the wireless off, these are contractors trying to meet the DOD security needs maybe they do not understand and just go blitz, or maybe DOD says no wireless period I have no idea. It's easier and faster for me on my end anyway.

I think it s more about someone getting into the laptop wirelessly and seeing whats stored on it though than whats being transmitted. but I do not work for DOD/Navy contractors so I can only guess as to why the policies exist.
