I tried to add a GFCI outlet to the bathroom this weekend. The problem is that the house was built back in the 1970s and has a weird way of wiring. There are three light switches on the wall. One is the vanity light, one is the shower light and one is the fan.
Everything in the box is a big tangled mess of cables that was painted over back when it was installed way back when.
Now there is a 14-3 cable that runs from the vanity light switch over to an outlet next to the sink. It connects to that outlet and runs up to a vanity light over the sink.
The white and black from the 14-3 connect to the outlet, and then the white from cable to the vanity is connected as well. The red from the 14-3 is pigtailed to the black from the vanity light.
I wanted to put in a GFCI switch there, but it doesn't work and the directions say I need to call an electrician. The circuit breaker for the bathroom is 15A.
How would ATOT recommend doing this? I have a picture I'd like to post, but still trying to figure out how to do so here on the new forums.
