Finally no more annoying phone calls, and it's FREE! Can't get hotter than that.

The list went live today (9/4/02) and there were over 100,000 people signing up the first day. Took the site a long time to load beacuse it was overloaded but give it time or try the 866 number.

I'll try take anything people post and add it to this list...

Here's the link! - Wisconsin

DOH, Then I foudn this site that already has them all... Here you go...

It gets updated every quarter so if you sign up before 12/31/02, you will be on for 1/1/03. It also lasts for 2 years and then you have to sign up again.

My wife works for an insurance agent, and they are not looking forward to this list, cause it afects them too. No more cold calling for them if your on the list, which means lost income. Maybe I am biased a little but this list isn't all good.

I just watched it on the new earlier. Thank God this has come about. This with caller ID should stop the annoying practice of telemarketing in Wisconsin, at least it will cut it down.

Thanks for the link, signing up now.

What's stopping someone from going through the Wisconsin phone book and adding all the number? (Didn't look at the site...) Other than a lot of time being used, of course.

(Sorry....it's early yet and my funny bone isn't working.)

Good news for Wisconsin residents. Now if only they had these for spam... I'm getting killed right now to the tune of 10-20 messages a day.

I signed up for the GA No Call list at $5 for two years and the calls have almost totally stopped.
It's really fun, if someone does call, to tell them you are on the list and listen to them appologize
and hurry to hang up. It's up to a $2000 fine per call if you report them. That's hitting them where it hurts.

Darth Maul - most people, like me, never consider how it hurts sales people. We are just happy
to get the telemarketers off our backs. I never buy anything unless I initiate the call anyway.
I hope you wife can find alternative means to find leads than cold calling on the phone.
Here's wishing you and yours the best.

Damn.. I live 5 minutes from the border of Wisconsin in Illinois and I'd absolutely love to have something like this. I was talking to a friend the other day how the telemarketers literally hold you hostage with all their calls. They've ruined it and they are invading my privacy as far as I'm concerned.

Salvador, I totaly agree with you. They ruined it for themselves. If they hadnt there wouldnt be a list for this. No offense to you DarthMaul but there is better ways to tell people about what your selling then bothering them over their phone, like advertising. Most companies advertise so as not to piss people off twords thier company. Could you picture if AOL did this instead of giving out cd's? Regardless if someone is signed up to this list chances are they wouldnt buy anything from your wife anyhow so it is a win win situation for your wife and any other telemarketers in my eyes. Weeds out the people that dont want to listen.

Ya know what, I'm sorry if your wife's comapny can't make as much money now, but I don't really care. If a company gets 90% of it's sales by bugging people at home with phone calls, then that's too bad for them. I didn't give them permission to call me during dinner or at 7AM on Saturday or anything else. I honestly don't really care who this bill hurts. They will have to find some other way to annoy people that have no interest in what they are selling. There's always mass mailings, emails, etc. At least those I can glance at and hit delete or thrown away and nto have some pushy sales person on the phone telling me how I really need their product.

I used to be nice and say No, no, no, no, no enough times until they finally gave in and and would end the call. Now I just say Not Interested and hang up because most of them are so pushy it's annoying.

Good Riddance.

Too bad WI's fine is only $100...

From the FAQ:

What are the penalties if I call someone on Wisconsin's No Call List?
Businesses who unlawfully call numbers on the Wisconsin No Call List will be in violation of Wisconsin's No Call statute and rule and will be subject to the maximum penalty of $100 for every violation.

Are there any lawyers out there?
I wonder if these sort of phone calls (and for that matter, spam) fall anywhere near the legal definitions of ?harassment? or even ?stalking?.

Just curious,

Mosh

Kudos to Wisconsion. We started this in Indiana at the beginning of this year, and it is great. Some fireman and policeman are opposed to it, because they say they can't call now for their donation funds. Don't listen to them if they start that there. The law is here that they are free to call, but they can't HIRE people to call for them. I totally agree with that. If they can't take an hour or two a day for a week to call for their foundation, and would rather give a company over half the proceeds, then they don't deserve it.

Once again, congratulations on getting this started. You won't regret it.

THe WI list does exempt certain things like Charities can still call and if you are a customer of a company, they can still call you and things like that. But it should stop most of them. I really don't need any more Siding, Credit Cards, Windows, etc...

Sign up by mid-Sept. and you'll be on the quarterly list that goes out on Oct. 1st... (may vary per state)

Maybe someone would like to start a compilation list thread of the sites for each state's no call list? That'd be worth stickying at the top for a week or two (time = money; --> hot deal!) Would do it myself, but I'm unlikely to update/edit often enough. It's not hard to find the info (simple web search) but maybe a thread will prompt into action those that wouldn't get around to it otherwise.

Here's Kansas' No-Call Info & Sign-up Site (Free & it lasts 5 years!)

thanks for the post -- reminded me to take care of it.

There was a big list someone had put together or had a link to or something but I couldn't find it when I search for No Call.

Anyway, here's a list of what Wisconsin's Law Does NOT cover... Which sounds like quite a lot actually.. hmmm.

There are exceptions for the following:

Calls made to a current client. A current client is a person who has a current agreement to receive, from the call or the person on whose behalf the call is made, property, goods or services of the same type promoted by the call.

Calls made to customers who have given you prior express invitation or permission to call.

Calls encouraging the customer to donate property, goods or services to a "nonprofit organization."

Calls encouraging the customer to purchase property, goods or services from a "nonprofit organization" unless sale proceeds are subject to Wisconsin sales tax or federal income tax.

Calls made for noncommercial purposes such as polls, surveys and political purposes.

Calls made to a number listed in the current local business telephone directory.

A call made by an individual acting on his or her own behalf, and not as an employee or agent of any other person.
