Just got back from a consult with the oral surgeon. all 4 of my wisdom teeth are coming out. One of them is sideways, and the root is hooked into the nerve even. He said that after taking that out, I would have a tingling/wouldnt be able to feel my lips for a few days.

I had mine taken out this past August, not as bad as I thought it would be. I had a good doctor which helped. Get the IV, if you just get laughing gas and the general anesthesia (sp?), it probably won't be enough. I don't remember a thing from the actual procedure, nor from much of that day.

I didn't have much pain, just keep up with the medicine. The only thing is that you are going to have a really tight jaw for about a week, and you are going to be really swollenm, (I looked like a chipmunk for about a week).

I had mine done on a Friday, and I tried to go back to work on Monday, but I wound up leaving early. But by Tuesday, I felt well enough to work the entire day.

Oh, and mine were impacted as well ...

It's not as bad as most people make it out to be. They don't always give you vicadin anyhow- just start you off on some larger doses of IB.
Just eat some cookies and suck it up. It'll be over a few days later.

OK - Well I'll ruin your day.

Had mine out a couple of years ago. It lasted forever, and I got an infection and all swollen a couple weeks later.

Took about 3 months for my mouth to feel "normal" again.

Anyone know anything about mixing pain meds? I take 750 mgs of Naprosyn a day (prescription), on top of some other meds, and I can just see the fun of getting my wisdom teeth out w/o other pain meds.

I have an appointment this Friday. Just one coming out, they say the others don't need it. Its all the way grown in and NOT impacted. Just getting a local, they say that all I need... why am I worried? :frown:

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once. Two were impacted, two were growing in sideways. It's something I had been meaning to take care of for years, but I was too chicken...finally had them taken out at 29. Anyway, it was great. I was stoned the rest of the day...totally amazed at the wonderful things I saw on the drive home...and I didn't need any pain medication after the anesthesia finally wore off. No swelling, no problems. I had the BEST oral surgeon ever. I have had 2 friends have their wisdom teeth out with the same surgeon with the same results.

For the love of jeff, ask for a general. You want to be out cold while a surgeon is prying and pulling things out of your jawbone. So yes, be worried.

I have to get mine out at the beginning of spring break. All four of mine are sideways. I guess it's a good thing I'm getting them out because they're starting to hurt.

I had all 4 of mine out several years ago. I never took the pain meds they gave me, just the anti-swelling stuff.

You must use an oral antiseptic so you don't get an infection.

I had mine taken out a week ago, couldn't really chew for one day, but it's worth it for the gas they give you. Just make sure you rinse with warm salt water for a week after the surgery because getting that area infected would suck.

Just some advice try not to take the pain medication as much as possible because they will probably prescribe you controlled prescription drugs. The more you take the worse it is for your kidneys.

Try to suck it up and don't try not to get them infected

Got 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled out and got infected and had to wait a whole 2-3 weeks before i was fully back to normal.

Just some more advice rinse with hydrogen peroxide.
I know, I know it tastes like crap but hey its better than getting them infected.

Good luck to you

I ahd my first wisdom tooth taken out with nothing but novocain. I could feel everything, it just didn't hurt. Really sucked :frown: When I finally had the other 3 taken out I opted for the knockout punch. I little bit of gas and I was out. Woke up, had the wife take me to BK so I could gourge myself before the meds wore off. Didn't eat for almost a week after!

If you have the chance get the procedure done in a real hospital because there is small but very real chance that something can go wrong in the oral surgeon's chair. Many Oral Surgeons also work out of a hospital or two. Luckily, my medical covers a hospital stay so I got it done there.

I also can't believe that some people can actually recover within a few days. I had 4 done too but it too almost 5 days before I could even eat crap like mushroom soup and soften bread.

My top two wisdom teeth were already portruding so it was no big deal to yank them out. My bottom two were way in the gum line so they had to cut into the gum line and then split the teeth in two (or something like that) and then yank them out and sutured them. That's the rough part. Everyone is a bit different so it depends how serious your procedure will be.

I did have to say that I went to school the next day. Big mistake. My classmates while in lecture decided that it would be funny to crack jokes. I was having a tough enough time to pay attention but the pain was so bad even though I was doped up on pain killers. Needless to say I went home after only an hour of lecture.

I had all four of mine out at once too, some of which had come in horizontally. I agree with some of the previous posters who said the pain was not as bad as expected. IIRC there *was* a ton of bleeding, but the pain was bearable. I did not need to use any of the pain medication.

It did become infected, though, so I had to take some penicillin for that. But it wasn't all bad...as a nice bonus the penicillin completely eliminated my acne. Its effectiveness made accutane look like a placebo.
