Same is true in most states in the US. You, generally, are not allowed to protect real property with deadly force. If you are defending the life of yourself or another on the real property, then it is justified if you reasonably believe yourself or another to be in immidiate fear of deadly force. Some state have a requirement that if you are able to retreat out of the home you must do so, as deadly force is an absolute last resort. Others presume that if someone breaks into an occupied dwelling, then the reasonable fear exists, and you may start shooting away.
The reasoning is that real property can be replace, human life cannot. (Yet). Therefore, one cannot use deadly means to protect real property alone.
