At least in Houston you can drive around armed to the teeth. In Chicago only the gangs are armed, the populace has been disarmed.

The handgun ban has fallen and now the new license scheme is being taken to court, likely to be changed as well.

It proves itself. Go there sometime. Have you ever been? Go anywhere outside of the loop/wrigleyville/Michigan avenue, and a few other places, and the city is complete trash.

Every major city has good neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods, and a lot of stuff in between. The same goes for suburbs.

Next time you're in the city take a look at Wicker Park, Bucktown, Lakeview, Roscoe Village, Andersonville, Southport, Lincoln Square, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Bridgeport, Gold Coast, Beverly, Streeterville, Lakeshore East, Millennium Park, West Loop, Little Italy, Greektown, etc...

All that means is that you can have a handgun in your home. We still cannot have a CCW in this state, which explains my statement. In Houston I could arm myself before traveling through a bad neighborhood, in Chicago I cannot.

That is also moving through the courts, IIRC. We will most likely become a "may issue" state within a few years (perhaps sooner without Daley to champion the cause).

Also, a gun doesn't make you invulnerable when going through a bad neighborhood particularly at night. There are some neighborhoods that I wouldn't walk through armed with an Uzi and a bandoleer of fragmentation grenades. Generally the best defense is not to be in those places.

You know, I really don't think Houston is that ghetto. Sure there are bad neighborhoods, but I have never been robbed/held at gunpoint. I knew a few people who got mugged, though. I drove past a lot of bad Houstonian neighborhoods in the last few days and I'm still alive.

I'd say the ghettos of Houston are nothing compared to South Central LA/Compton or some parts of Chicago, but that's just me.

my in laws live in streeterville, its nice, but there are tons of vagrants and panhandlers all over when its remotely nice out.

little italy is surrouned by utter shithole a buddy used to live there, and its only not crime ridden because the italians take care of themselves.

i got stuck on lower wacker over xmas and man, do I wish I was carrying.

we know it doesnt make you invulnerable, but the thought that criminals have to wonder if you are carrying helps even the playing field

Because your trying to use area covered instead of people. Which thankfully is not how our government nor constitution works.

I'm trying to think of millions of people not represented because of one high density population center. Somehow thankfully is not a word I'd be using...but then again, I'm not a liberal....

Really it seems your fellow conservatives want to ignore 47+% of the population now after the November elections. Your party and peers don't agree with you. Its ok when its your majority and not ok when its not your majority, got it...

That happens in streeterville because of proximity to the tourist spots. I too thought Chicago had a lot of panhandlers until I went to San Francisco.
I hardly even notice ours now.

The city razed all the public housing on Taylor a couple years ago, plus with University Village going in to the south a few years back it has really brought the whole area up.

Granted that lower wacker isn't somewhere I'd like to hang out for a few hours it isn't inherently dangerous anymore. The city does a better job at keeping the vagrants out these days and they installed a bunch of security/traffic cameras.

I've been a gun owner for most of my life. I entirely oppose laws that put restrictions on law abiding citizens.

That said if your dumb ass wants to go wander around Roseland, Austin, Englewood, or Humbolt Park in the middle of the night don't count on a gun to do a whole lot for you.

most money in Illinois gets spent in the area around Chicago. For people that dont know about 50% of the population of Illinois is around large cities in and around Chicago mostly. A lot of the state of illinois is all farmland. So really this is just a Chicago overspending problem.

Yes, the whole area is up. At the expense of the communities that had to absorb Chicago's problem people...

Illinois requirement to submit your fingerprints to purchase a firearm legally constitutes the actions of a Police State!

The spend and tax problem is not just limited to the city of Chicago.

I know a bunch of people and Companies now in process of fleeing the city of Schaumburg just west of O'hare airport (home of Motorola but probably not for long) because they just doubled property tax rates. People that were paying an already outrageous $8,000 a year for a normal ranch home got tax bills for $16,000.

Needless to say this time next year the whole city will look radically different and empty.

...by borrowing 15 billion dollars.

"As the state's stack of unpaid bills grows, Gov. Pat Quinn is floating the idea of borrowing roughly $15 billion to alleviate the pressure, though taxpayers would be saddled with loan payments for years."

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...uinn-20101227_1_income-tax-tax-hike-pat-quinn

I dont see how this could go wrong.

Go Pat!

We have great choices, eh? Brady would have cut taxes and done the same thing. Neither party wants to raise taxes to fix the problem. And before you start on the "TAXES! JOBS!" rant, its worth noting that Illinois has some of the lowest state taxes in the nation and it hasn't helped our situation.

Its a lot more than 50%. I live downstate and I hear people whine about Chicago spending all of the time. They forget that downstate is a small minority of Illinois's population.
