my last Motorola phone was the V710 on Verizon. That thing was a tank, withstood a lot of abuse, and had phenomenal reception, and excellent voice quality. It was also a tank, thing was huge, but with that brought a big and nice screen for a standard clam-shell phone.
Most phone manufacturers are entirely hit or miss. I've had some great Samsung phones, and some with a few issues.

Looking forward to some proper reviews of the Motorola Droid, interested in reception and voice quality. Everything else I am completely sold on already. Quality of the camera is a bonus, but it having a flash (and hopefully a flashlight mode like my Omnia) is great - though completely expected. Still not understanding the decision to not include a flash on some phones (looking at you Apple), seems standard, for, well... a long time, before even the first iPhone.

Why isn't anyone mentioning the Omnia II? Forget the original Omnia. The new Omnia uses a 667 or 800mhz processor with plenty of ram AND a 3.7" touchscreen. I'm definitely considering it as my next phone.

Probably because the Omnia 1 left a foul taste in the mouth of everyone who owned one . . . Verizon is now giving them away for free with contract.

Seriously though, I saw a few pictures of the Omnia II, looks alright but looks can be deceiving.

DBZ, I really hope you like Android and iPhone OS's, because that's all you're going to hear about for the next few years....

BB is dead.

Because Verizon cripples OSes. The Omnia I as a WinMo phone received plenty of good reviews. It was supposed to compete against the original Touch Diamond. As HTC made TouchFlo better and better, the Omnia I clearly fell out of favor. If you look at it as a phone that's supposed to take down the iPhone, it can't do it, but when you compare against other WinMo devices on other carriers like the pathetic LG Incite, the Omnia I is far better.

The Omnia II is certainly worth looking at:

Who knows how Verizon's gonna cripple it, but initial reviews showed that with 6.1, Samsung's TouchWiz was a bit laggy. Of course you could put another shell on it and it'd be smooth as hell. Later reviews running 6.5 said that the interface was pretty smooth.

Why do people make proclamations like this?

Its his opinion.
And while I dont fully agree I would say there is some supporting evidence. The Palm Pre didnt kick ass like Palm had hoped. I dunno if they just didnt hype WebOS enough or what, but they were expecting it to do much better by this point.
Unless they release to other phone manufacturers it might not be able to compete with Android, which is already very multi-platform.

And despite the fact that BB is still a better business device, many bussinessmen and lawyers are begging their IT departments to get iPhones for them.
As for the Storm and Storm 2 being the next big wave: Most professionals who've had the Storm have been unimpressed with it. They dont like the virtual keyboard and the whole thing is a little to sluggish for general work use. The general public seems to love it, but thats not RIM's target customer, and they dont buy a thousand at a time either.

I dont agree the Palm will die, nor do I think the BB will disappear, but I do understand why he said what he said.

It really all comes down to preference. In terms of performance and specs, the DROID is the closest you're going to get on VZW (for now). iPhone's OS is of course a bit older, which means it's more polished, tweaked, and refined, but Android 2.0 is turning some heads. There are lots of great things about the Droid (720x480 video camera, 5mp camera, 16GB MicroSDHC card included, 3.7 inch screen with 480x854 resolution, same CPU as the iPhone 3GS) and as of now, is probably the best phone you can get on VZW's network. I got to play with it a bit last week, and tomorrow I'll have an hour or so with it. I hated the G1, so I'm hoping the Droid delivers the kind of Android experience I was hoping for last year. I'll be ditching my BlackBerry Tour for one, depending on how much I like it after I get some more time with it.

Also, you might want to check this out. Nice side by side comparison of the iPhone and the Droid.

Its one thing to say you think Android will usurp blackberry or something like that, but to make a flat out proclamation "BB is dead" is silly. The Storm might suck, but the Tour is considered one of the best phones they've made yet by a lot of people.

I don't think BlackBerry is dead. Not by far. There are way too many companies out there that are setup on a BES. Porting over to anything else would be extremely time consuming, and probably quite expensive.

BlackBerry's push e-mail is flat out unrivaled.

I don't mean to ruffle feathers about phone OS's, but the reality is that the iPhone & Android are going to be the 2 major players in fairly short order, the Android OS is a disruptive OS, it changes the game, popularity & total sales are fluid, and things change quickly.

Blackberry had a shot and just plain blew it, they didn't bother to make a decent browser and their phones are non-intuitive. We're going to look back on them in a few years and go "WTF were we thinking?" While Palm just fell apart with no clear direction, the Pre would have been revolutionary 2 years ago, the MID they were working on would have been revolutionary.

BB should just buy Motorola... they likely could have bought it for next to nothing a year ago when the Droid was incubating.

Did you ever figure out what you wanted to get Andy?

I actually want to get a new phone...let me know what you decide.

I've been contemplating which one to get, and I decided that I'm going with the new Droid. Not sure if it's going to be the Moto yet, but most likely.

I have to scrounge up $200 somehow...

To be honest, if there is a new droid that comes out by the time I get the cash, I might get that. Just not totally sure yet.

First step is the money...
