With the Verizon network, is there anything comparable to the iPhone?

I currently have a hunk of junk LG AX585, and was looking to get a smartphone. I had the BlackBerry Curve, and ended running it over with the lawnmower, however I didn't care for it that much. I'm looking for more of a touchscreen phone.

I really love the iPhone, and was thinking about the Samsung Omnia, but I highly doubt that I would have the patience for WinMO.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Verizon will be releasing an Android phone soon, that is your closest bet. There are other solid phones, but not exactly iPhone emulators - HTC Imagio, HTC Touch Pro 2, Blackberry Tour (no touch screen, probably won't like this if you didn't like the curve), Blackberry Storm 2 (soon).

What is it you're actually looking for in a phone?

I don't want to get Android right away, because I want to wait until they update it so I don't blow $500 on a shitty phone.

I really like the design of the Samsung Omnia, but i'm not sure if i would like the OS. Have you had any experience with it? Can you get any apps for the Omnia?

Android is not new. This might be the first Verizon Android phone, but it came out last October. There are already quite a few Android phones on the US market (T-Mobile G1, myTouch, Motorola Cliq, HTC Hero). Can't imagine the phone will be $500 either.

I have not use the Omnia itself, but I have used Windows Mobile plenty. I am using a Touch Pro II right now. Its not so bad...no, it is not as intuitive as the newer operating systems, but the hardware manufacturers do a good job of "hiding" the Windows Mobile underpinnings of the OS. There are TONS of apps for Windows Mobile - problem is, they're not always easy to find. Microsoft did just release the Windows Mobile Marketplace, their version of the App Store, but it hasn't really filled out yet. It will get there.

If you want an all-touch screen device, at this point I wouldn't get an Omnia - I would recommend the HTC Imagio or waiting a little bit. In the near future, Verizon will be launching the Blackberry Storm 2, Droid, Palm pre (early next year supposedly), and, well, the Omnia II.

The Moto Droid on Verizon is supposedly completely awesome, and that's just the alpha firmware. Definitely my phone of choice if I HAD to use Verizon.

Yes, the Motorola Droid will be the closest thing to an iPhone experience (and in many ways better).. Other than that, the Palm Pre hits Verizon in January, and that's also a similar experience to the iPhone (and in many ways better)

The high-end Blackberries are not directly comparable to an iPhone.
Android is an operating system, not a phone. It will at version 2.0 and given they've gone through more versions than the iPhone up to that point, its actually better. The phone itself is the Droid, and probably not the best name they could have picked BUT, it is an awesome phone.
You will not blow 500 bucks and it will not be on a shitty phone. The Omnia is very nice but again, not directly comparable to an iPhone.

If I werent so fed up with Verizon right now I'd go for the Droid. Hopefully it will come out on multiple carriers (eventually). Right now its going to be a Tracfone and a netbook for me. Much cheaper and still fairly convenient.

I would go with the imagio. Its exactly like a touch pro 2 except without a physical keyboard. Verizion cant keep the touch pro 2 in stock. The Imagio is your best bet if the physical keyboard is not important. It comes stock with win 6.5 and has flash lite. Not to sure about the droid but, so far Motorola phones have been horrendous so even with the droid hype, their rep for phones is not good.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about the Samsung Omnia. It doesn't seem to be well liked. However, it is 15 dollars with 2 year contract right now. The Omnia 2 is coming, but will obviously be more expensive.

I personally am waiting for the Moto Droid and Calgary Android phones before I make a purchase. The HTC Imagio looks cool, but I want a real QWERTY keyboard, none of this pure touch screen crap. Oh, landscape keyboards only. The more portrait styles of the Pre and Blackberries are hard to type on for me.

LOL, the Storm 2 doesn't even stack up against the 1st gen iPhone

How do you compare first gen iPhone with BB Storm 2?

ive had the omnia for about 6 months now. im on my 3rd phone. first one the display went out, they replaced it. the second one wouldnt align, stuck in a loop. rather than try to actually fix it, they replaced it. but, the one they just sent me already had the firmware update that fixed a bunch of stuff and unlocked the gps, so it was ok for me. some things i love about the phone are the ease of use. ive had a great time with it overall, but there are some things that annoy the hell out of me. one is the txt tones. to use custom tones you have to place the files in the \windows directory, and after like 6 or 7 consecutive text msgs in a short time it will stop ringing. it wont even vibrate. there are still lots of areas in the registry that are locked out, like the phones overall volume settings. also, the samsung dialer is not able to be changed, like noted in many sites on mods for the phone. it has a nice cam in it tho, i use it for all kinds of stuff for work as well as personal. i really wish the text messages would allow me to enable the "notifications" feature, if im not around to hear the initial ring it doesnt reminder beep to let me know i have a msg waiting. doesnt do this for calls either. the rotation animations are fairly slow overall, so switching from portrait to landscape is a pain when youre really in a hurry.

overall, i like the phone. there are a TON of free apps to mess with, as well as a good amount of paid apps that help as well. lots of freedom for the most part to make the phone "you". cant wait to see the 2 or the HD come around, just to see the upgrades/ fixes they have over this model.

I think Moose should tell us more about the Storm2 being worse than the first iPhone. But we all know he has no experience with it and is spitting fanboi bile as usual.

It's improved greatly over the original Storm, but without even using it I can say for my needs it can't even touch the iPhone. The apps I use on a day to day aren't avilable on a BB, and probably won't be anytime soon. That said, UI wise it won't be as good, but if you need access to the mail shit BB is the way too go. There's really no reason to compare the 2 phones. I know RIM was going for an iPhone like phone with the Storm but they failed hard. The 2nd gen will be improved but still not a comparable phone.

turns out i have to go through my mom's business rep to get the Pro Touch 2. i'm still trying to debate whether I want the imagio or the PT2... i've never had a phone with a QWERTY keyboard besides the BB curve, and that was a hunk of garbage.

?

the pre is coming out for verizon in a few months, the imagio looks good, and the blackberry storm2 this week (october 28th i think). dont forget about the 2 android phones too! touch pro 2 is alright, but its the same old hardware from the touch pro 1, just with a bigger screen and keyboard. its also very big and heavy, but if you are needing that kind of a phone, then by all means go for it!

just wait and see these next few weeks...should be an interesting rest of the year for verizon - they actually have a decent lineup for this christmas/new years.

I dislike Sprint, but I kinda like the Palm Pre. The Verizon Pre will be on my list of contenders unless Verizon locks out the benefits of the phone. The same concerns exist for the other phones I'm interested in, all Android based. If Verizon locks them up, I may jump ship to T-Mo.

I have the Dare. It's definitely not an iPhone competitor, but it's a solid phone.

I've been reading about Android, and how it's coming out on the 6th. My main concern is that it's with Motorola, and I've had nothing but trouble with Motorola.
