Anyone check this out yet? I'm sorta intrigued by the "hardcore" aspects of it, but a few things in the Massively write-up put me off, such as describing the world as a "collection of dungeon-related mini-games." If anyone's tried it I would be interested in knowing what the world and environment are like.

its amazing how much bad press (and incorrect) its getting.

SOE did not make this, they just host it.. It is not a new game, but a game that has been running in non English areas for awhile successfully.

It is Asian (big eyes, big boobs) but tamed down to a less annoying state then it normally is if you don't like it.

it is grindy and old school (it states this in pretty much all the advertisements for it so if you don't like HARD, don't play it)

Graphics look badly dated, like a really good PS2 game, pretty bland dungeon and town wise.

Combat is a combination of Real time, blocking, and moving out of the way. Its interesting enough to make the game seem to take some skill.

Mana and health don't regen, again this is old school.

Right now I would suggest waiting a few days, week to try it. Its F2P and on STEAM.. its getting hammered harder then a nail in a Hammer convention. It takes 3-10 minutes to change a load screen, and often it will disconnect.. (this was not an issue till STEAM release day).

its PVP and item loot which means it will be OU shortly.. step out of safe zone, die instantly to somebody 50 levels over you, loss best item.

Of course it has penalties for ganking.. you can be killed by any "law abiding" person with no penalties to them.. so it encourages the Gankers to group up..

it is perma death, but only sort of.. if you have played any paper Roleplaying game.. there was always a chance of no rez if you died.. this is the same.. at start there is 0% chance you WONT rez.. as you level and get higher the chance of you joining the dust is higher and higher.

Why it wont make it:

its hard-
its skill based-
it rewards well rounded groups and teamwork-

Things that actually make it bad:
dated simple graphics
very slow solo play
repatative and simple tile sets
little to no story

It honestly wont be for many, I like it, but doubt many will.. we have all been WoWized.. this game is far more EverQuest then WoW..

"such as describing the world as a "collection of dungeon-related mini-games."

its just dungeons.. much like any of the old school RPG's where.. a town to buy, heal and get quests, then into a multi level dungeon to grind it out.. Most quests are Kill 20 beetles types. Most dungeons have mini bosses that are quests and many have spawned instances.. small area with 20 mobs, you clear it and can leave. I wouldn't call them Mini games.. every RPG has the kill 20.. this game doesn't try to disguise it.. its combat, leveling , skill tree management and equipment hunting like every other RPG, they just don't slow it down with time sinks (resource gathering, faction grinds). The time sink is the actual combat and dungeons.

Sounds interesting. I downloaded it overnight on Steam, I'll try it out later today. Permadeath is a bit too hardcore for me, I just don't have the patience to start over again and again and again. I'll see how long it can keep me entertained though.

That part I like, including the perma-death. But I don't like not having a large, open world to explore, a la EQ. Will probably pass on this.

Very interested in these "hardcore" elements of the game. Perma-death makes things a lot more exciting. Color me curious.

To those who tried it.. is it worth a download?

Downloaded it yesterday, couldn't try it because it was constantly failing to connect to the servers.

Judging by the community hub though, everyone's saying the game sucks.

I have not been able to actually log in and play yet either. Tried several times last night and a couple times this morning, no luck.

I'm not saying it don't suck.. but I do suggest trying it yourself.. point me to a STEAM forum for a recently released game and not see about 75% suck 25% good ratio of posts.. But wait a few weeks.. us that do want to play cant even get in.. for those of you trying, it is working.. the "connect" if its going you are connecting (takes 30-60 minutes sometimes).. its just taking forever (they need A Q counter) Surprising it sucks so bad yet you cant get in as so many are playing.

again.. i have to say 75% wont like it.. this is not a easy game, in play or interface or time. But i do say try it, don't take the 12 year old BF players opinion as fact.. you guys see its hard to get into.. so how many say it sucks just because of that?

I was able to play for about 20-30 minutes yesterday. I really only got through the first tutorials on town shops/locations, then about 5 minutes in to the first dungeon I got disconnected and could not get back on. This is becoming really annoying, 4-5 days in and I still can't log in reliably. I'll probably leave it alone for a couple weeks (and god help them if thats not long enough to solve their connectivity issues) to avoid becoming so annoyed that I simply uninstall and refuse to touch it again.

I "think" i like the game, still reserving judgement, but this horrible wait and not knowing if its wait or down is getting on my nerves also..

Yeah, I was reading this thread and just realized all the comments were from February. I play Planetside 2 and see Wizardry listed as an SOE game and was wondering about it. (I never played any Wizardry games, but as an old gamer I recognized the name/franchise.)

as the lone "defender" in this thread (if you call it defender, i really do try to judge a game with play, and not an hour, but some real playtime) I'm no longer playing, I played a bit after it tamed down so getting into game and playing was normal. I tend to say its to old school, it would have fit right in about the time EQ came out, but today its simply to annoying in some game play aspects. The PvP is pretty much like any other, boring, PvP ( i say) will never work in a MMORPG, there is no way to make it "fair", and I'm not talking even battle, but so the annoying don't annoy, and its got a purpose in game.

End result after many levels of play, I would chose EQ over it, and I wont play EQ now days, its just to harsh, interface, grind, lack of refinement. Wizardry is a game from 98 but made in 2010. I would easily recommend at least 10 other F2P games before it. But if you enjoy grind, and some pretty intense difficulty (there can be some pride in leveling in those games) it might be for you.

As always, its free, judge for yourself, its just a download away.

oh one last thing, I was drawn to this game by it Namesake games (wizardry) this game is Wizardry in name only.
