I've been using the Motorola F3 for the last year, thing works great and it fits in my pockets and my budget.

Now I'm looking for a replacement. I want to become a little more connected, like having access to my Google calendar, chat, and mail all the time, sometimes watching youtube on wifi. I also want to keep my device size down, most definitely on the thickness, the F3 is 9.1mm thick. Also it needs to be cheap(<$300), contract-free, and AT&T compatible for 3G. Android would be a definite plus.

Haven't been able to find anything that fits my needs. The Xperia X10 seems to work but the price is just a little bit to steep.

Any suggestions? Maybe go used?

To get a nice device off contract for under $300 you will more than likely have to go used.

i guess a nexus S if you could get it for $300. i see them new on amazon.com for at&T at around $385.

so its POSSIBLE you could do it for $300 if you went used, or ebay or something.

Samsung Focus at $200-$250 new on ebay? Runs the latest version of Mango as long as you get rev 1.3. That's what I am planning on doing. Not too keen on Android and don't want to spend a lot of money till the next gen of WP and ICS gets more mainstream next year.

Any particular reason why it must be off contract? I understand not wanting to be tied down BUT in the US all the carriers use different frequencies and none of the phones are compatible with any rival carriers so if you cancel your service you're left with an expensive paperweight.

I'm not saying that I agree with contracts, but it is what it is. You have to make the most of it within the system that currently exists. Buying phones off contract would be useful if any carrier offered lower prices for not being on a contract (T-Mobile used to, not sure anymore) or if it gave you the freedom to take your phone to a different carrier if you wanted. But you can't do either of those things so I don't get the advantage. You pay a lot more for an older phone and you get virtually no benefit.
