I am trying to get Wake on Lan to work over the internet. So far I am able to wake my server from with in the LAN. I have opened UDP port 666 on my router and all settings are, as far as I could tell, correct. Using "WOL - Magic Packet Sender" on my server and putting it on the Receive tab I was able to receive the magic packet from my laptop over the internet. See picture below. "WOL - Magic Packet sender" on the left is on my server over a remote session and the window on the right is the WOL program on my laptop sending the magic packet.

Here are my device settings on my NIC.

I have also tried several other programs as well without any luck.

In my experience WOL over internet does not work consistently.

Instead, my recommendation is to use a router with DD-WRT. You can then log into your router's admin page remotely and click a button to send the magic packet to your computer. The router then sends the packet to the computer which is much more reliable. Works for me every time.

I see... currently I am using the Router/modem combo from my ISP. Westell 7500 and I do not see anything related to WOL for that router. So basically I would have to put Westell into Bridge mode to turn off the router and then use a router that supports WOL?

This ^

Honestly, I opted for an even easier solution with LogMeIn free edition. It seems to always work. If you search here, I made a thread and there was some lengthy discussion about this, but in the end it was unreliable.

Wake on Lan relies on the networks in between where the computer you are sending the packet from and the destination routing a multicast packet. Most networks do not allow this type of traffic for a number of reasons.

On the network at work we have allowed multicast traffic to be sent from a single IP. I wrote a server that sits on a port and waits for a connection from one of the wake on lan clients I wrote and then creates a magic packet and targets the computers subnet and sends the packet. Getting our netadmins to allow this type of traffic from even a single IP was a bit of work. Anyone remember the days of smurf attacks?

I guess what I am trying to say is, give up on trying to wake a computer up from anywhere off of your local subnet.
