LOWELL, Mass. ? Don't try to slip in that extra head of lettuce when you're in the express check-out line in Lowell, Mass.
That's where a 51-year-old local woman became perhaps the world's first victim of supermarket rage Sunday when she brought 13 items into the 12-items-or-fewer lane, police said.
Now the suspect, 38-year-old Karen Morgan, is on the loose after failing to appear for her arraignment on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon Monday.
The victim, who asked not to be identified, told WCVB News that she didn't know she brought too many items into the express line at Market Basket when Morgan stopped her.
"There was a woman behind me and she said, 'Oh, some people don't know how to count.' And I said, I just questioned her, and I said, 'Oh, do you have a problem with me?' And she said yes, and started swearing and cussing me out," the victim said.
After leaving the grocery, the victim realized Morgan was following her.
"I said, 'Really, could you just leave me alone?'" the victims said. "And then she just brutally attacked me. She grabbed me by my hair, pulled me to the ground, kneed me in my stomach, and I was on the ground and she kicked me on my head and on my side and I got all scratched up. She drew blood."
The victim got her attacker's license plate number and gave it to police, who traced the license plate to Morgan.
Morgan has a history of missing court appearances for check larceny, police said.
