A St. John's lottery player may have saved a dozen dollars while cancelling an overcharged lottery ticket, but missed out on a $30-million jackpot.

A customer at the Corner Store, a convenience store in the Goulds neighbourhood of St. John's, ordered a $12 ticket on May 21, leading up to that night's Atlantic Lottery Lotto Max jackpot.

"The [clerk] printed it off and made a mistake on the machine, and it came out $27. She offered it to the customer and she said, no, she didn't want it," store owner Shawn Noel told CBC News on Thursday.

The clerk followed procedure and immediately voided the ticket, meaning that the numbers printed were put back into play.

However, no other ticker buyer in Atlantic Canada purchased them, meaning that a $30-million jackpot went unclaimed.

"Bad, bad luck," Noel said with a chuckle.

"It's nobody's fault. Rules were followed, right to the T. Right by the book."

...

"[But] I feel bad for the customer. That's a lot to play on your mind. What's 10 or 12 dollars on 30 million?" he said.
...

Hahahahaha! Sucks for her. Oh well.

The lotto is serious business here. You have to remember this 30M is coming from a region with about 2.5 million people in it.

Hah, whoops. Wonder if that woman reads the news and knows that's her. That would suck way way more than if she didn't know.

what do they mean the numbers get put back into play? they make it sound like if you pick 3, 10, 14, 30, and 42 that no one else can play those numbers.

Sue them for mental anguish!!!!

Actually, I could see an argument that the winning numbers were part of the first 12 sets of numbers (assuming each set is $1) and that if the clerk didn't make the mistake she would have purchased and won. She will then sue for negligence. I'm not saying I would do this or like it if she did, but it's plausible, that's for sure.

I don't understand what happened at the register. Why didn't the clerk just void it and start the transaction again? Why did the customer have to spend $27? Or was it the clerk's first day on the job and not notice that the price was 2x what it should have been?

This reminds me of that joke about a religious guy on a roof of a house praying for salvation and something about his god ends up saying "I sent you an inner tube, a boat and a fuking helicopter; what else do you want?"

she can't sue.

she declined the ticket after being asked if she wanted the messed up ticket. The clerk voided it and that is that.

Lotto Max is an expensive lottery. Its $50 million for this Friday's draw. 1 ticket is $5.00.
