Woman dies after gang rape on India bus

An Indian woman whose gang-rape aboard a bus in New Delhi spawned mass protests has died, according to a doctor who was treating her at a Singapore hospital.

Attackers assaulted the woman and her male companion on a bus December 16, robbing them of their belongings before dumping them at the side of a road, police said. Six suspects are now under arrest, including the bus driver and a minor.

Details are sparse but the victim died and the bus driver is under arrest. When the story broke and they said the bus was driving while it happened I wondered if he was in cohoots with the attackers, sounds like he was.

The good news is this appears to be the lightening rod to get change and the government is taking about posting names and pictures of rapists on websites.

Hopefully it brings some meaningful change. Unfortunately it's not the laws in India that are the problem. The current maximum penalty is life in prison. Protestors want it increased to death. The problem is the police don't enforce the law and many women do not report rapes. A lot of India is still very tribal where the woman is viewed as property. Rape is considered to be the woman's fault and something that shames her family. The third issue is the Indian court system, which works painfully slow. It can take a decade or more for these cases to be resolved. So criminals basically have a ten year free reign to do whatever they please while the trial goes through. The problem is systematic and until these things are addressed, the issue of sexual violence will continue.

I think Yahoo had posted she had a heart attack as well ( i cannot find it) i really hate to think it but I thought if she survives she is going to be need serious help for just her body's daily needs as your article states, she would never eat again.
