15 years for rape but the prosecution will aim for a conviction for the murder of the twin baby. Murder is 10 years to life sentence (which in practise is about 20 years). That is if this psycho doesn't bite the dust sooner.

Under Austrian law, the convictions can't be mathematically added, they are just factored in the sentence for the heaviest crime. So if the court finds him guilty of murder, he could get up to 20 years or life. If not, it's up to 15 years for the sack of other crimes.

Also he most likely will have to pay compensation for pain and suffering and therapy costs but even though the former are generally lower than in the US he most probably won't be able to afford both of them, and the province will pay the latter.

Where's the "don't tell me how to raise my kids" crowd now? They showed up to defend the FLDS ranch, but now they're nowhere to be seen.

20 years < 24 years. Only thing making this better is that he is old and will hopefully die in prison so this isn't an issue.

There's no warranty that he would be pardoned after 20 years if he gets life.

I see your point but the Austrian law in this matter isn't based on the eye for an eye approach.

If you attack someone and rape them, and then on another night attack and rape them again, that would be 2 counts of rape, each punishable separately by consecutive sentences. How come raping someone for 20 years doesn't = 2000 year sentence?

I'm commenting on foreign law so take this with a grain of salt please: Either the repeat crime is just another factor, or there are two sentence ranges for the single and repeat offense. It's up to the judge where in the range the sentence will be.

I think that European human right conventions include an upper limit for prison time or that there must be a possibility of a pardon but have no time to check this now. But it is possible that a murderer stays behind bars longer than 20 years

- if he got life and isn't pardoned after 20 years p.e. because he is unrepentent
- if he is repentent but mentally ill and diagnosed a danger to society. Then it's no prison time technically but the result is similar.

Update: The DNA tests have proven that he is the father of all six. The 19 years old daughter is still in life-threatening condition. The hospital however emphasised that so far it's speculation if the incest caused the illness. The father confessed most of the crimes. The prosecution confirmed that they will accuse him of murder.
