The main point of a contempt sentence is a period of time in the slammer that forces the offender to think about what they've done (or haven't done, in cases where the judge is trying to force compliance with a court order) and (hopefully) change their behavior. But this judge seems to think that contempt sentences are punishment. Unfortunately, that's illegal under the due process clause of the Constitution.
No, the proper procedure is to give the woman 30 days, then bring her back and see if her attitude's changed. If not, give her another 30 days. At some point, a trial on the original charges will occur, with or without her cooperation, a verdict will be decided, and a sentence imposed if she's found guilty. At that point, any remaining contempt sentence becomes irrelevant.

woman mouths off, and deservedly gets contempt for 30 days. At which point judge should wash his hand and have her carted off to spend her 30 days in the poke. After 30 days, if she still mouths off, send her off again. I have a feeling after 30 days behind bars her attitude would have changed a bit. However, a person mouthing off in court and a judge acting like a child racking up sentencing isn't solving anything or teaching anyone proper behavior.

But imagine you're the judge and you deal with people just like her ALL DAY EVERY DAY. (And often the same people over and over). Would get a little tiring after a few years. Not saying that's an excuse, but just an explanation.
And society would certainly benefit from someone like this chick with obvious severe impulse control and anger management issues being locked up for 300 days (probably much more once she's convicted of assault). Her grandfather certainly will.

Hey, I'm not saying she's not a douche. That is WELL established. I am saying the judge overreacted as well. It doesn't matter how much "shit" he puts up with every day. That is his job he chose. He either can deal with it or not. If he can't deal with it, then he needs to find another line of work.
Proper response would be to issue the initial 30 days of contempt ruling and send her packing to her accommodations for that duration. After which, if she keeps mouthing off, keep sending her back. Either she spends forever in jail or eventually learns.

I expect a judge to have a cool head. He can maintain order in the courtroom by saying 30 days and having her escorted out of the courtroom immediately.
