While I completely agree with everything you just said, i do not like the fact that a judge can put a person in jail for a year because he doesn't like the way said person talked to him. That is just begging to be abused and is entirely too subjective for this sort of punishment.

I would love to see this judges sentencing record and what other crimes he has given similar sentences for. Lets say he gives someone who has committed breaking and entering the same sentence, is her pissing a judge off the same danger to society as breaking and entering (or whatever) and therefore deserving the same sentence? I personally don't think so.

The Judge does not have 'sole power'. A judge works within the law, and it binds their actions. Such laws are the product of democratically elected officials.

If you take exception with a law it is not undeard of to seek its repeal, there are many methods of doing so.

Good luck, I imagine it will be a tough sale.

-Knock- -Knock-.

'Good evening, I want to repeal contempt of court. I don't think a judge should be able to put you in jail for acting like an ass in the court room. . . Would you sign my petition?'

-SLAM-

Do not let the no solicitation signs, disinterested householders, and inevitable hysterical laughter daunt you. You are a visionary.

Londo never went to college (or at least never finished). It all makes sense now.

Having a college degree doesn't guarantee success. I make low 6 figures a year which is in line with a person with a degree. I provide tecnical support to/mentor young engineers for the company for whom I wotk as well as technical support to out clients.

There are some seriously delusional people posting in this thread. I can only hope for their sakes that their ramblings are the result of temporary inebriation or some other disability

This woman is obviously a danger to people around her and doesn't respect any kind of rules or authority. She should be in jail for years, not just 300 days, but 300 days will be a good start. No doubt once she comes out she'll assault someone else or commit some other crime and be in jail again anyway.

Heh, petty criminals usually don't have the required intelligence to understand all that anyway.

This. It's shameful how our military has been reduced to catering to all these "Woe is me I have teh PTSD" crybaby bullcrap instead of making them man up and get out there.

I've heard that with a proper pair of prosthetic legs, a soldier can hop about the battlefield with even more agility than their meat-legged companions. Yet they release these so-called "injured" soldiers from their military obligations and give them cushy veterans benefits. It's no wonder that Al Qaeda is eating our lunch.

I can see 30 days, but 300 is power tripping.

She wouldn't have any days if she was able to control herself.

Is asking people to control themselves really considered power tripping? She kept egging the judge on, so he kept piling on the sentence. Anybody with half a brain would have realized after the first contempt of court that "hey I need to keep my mouth shut now or it will get worse".

When keeping it real goes wrong.

I think 300 seems a bit excessive. But at the same time judges within their courtrooms have wide latitude to enforce order. So it is difficult for me to have much sympathy for this lady.

There are rules of conduct in a courtroom. If you fail to abide by them, you'll have to deal with the consequences. Judges have a lot of leeway in how they keep the courtroom proceedings in line, including sending people to jail if need be. Don't want to end up with 300 days in jail? Don't be stupid.

This idiot deserves every bit of 300 days, society would be better off with her not out on the loose.

Free Speech has consequences. Better learn that now. When a judge is passing sentence that is not a good time to make the judge angry.

Not even keep mouth shut, but being respectful.

All she had to do was calmly ask her question and start it with "Your honor. . .?"

If respect is too much to ask for, there definitely deserves more jail time. 180 days I think would have been fair, but who am I to judge.

If I was the judge, i'd be like "Bailiff, permission to take this bitch out in back and shoot her."

That's maybe why i'm no judge eh?

Wish I understood why people were so nasty. It really doesn't take much to give people the benefit of the doubt that we're more likely to be on the whole... good. What does all this vitriol achieve?

People cheering, enjoying themselves, over criminals being punished by a system that is necessary to maintain law and order and which shouldn't be vengeful or malicious itself but apparently is. Revenge isn't just. oh.

So many hateful people living their lives vicariously through whoever happens to be able to provide some kind of justifiable narrative for the pleasure they think they need, that vengeful lust, which I admit is natural, i guess, but which should be taken care of by playing the new saints row 4 and and not by the experience of joy or ignorant indignation at the expense of others, just because it meets some standard which turns off your empathy switch.

This woman is obviously profoundly stupid, and likely unwell in many respects. Maybe if the US had some kind of mental health infrastructure or social conscience a lot of these people would be better behaved. Maybe if they had any hope at all then they wouldn't behave as if they don't. In any case, what does it hurt to believe this while simultaneously believing in law and order and giving her something reasonable like 30 days or, shit, i don't know, maybe even 90. They can't use contempt of court for some other purpose, like some ad hoc device for the greater good (protection for the grandmother or whatever).

Hey judge, asshole much? Double it. Double it again.

What does it achieve? It is supposed to achieve people having some goddamn respect in the courtroom and acting like adults, that's what it is supposed to achieve. Without order, a court can't do much, which is why it was decided when forming the legal system to put contempt of court into law. If you can't give respect to one person, why should they be expected to respect you back? Talking back to a judge isn't just rude and disrespectful, you're actually literally breaking the law, and giving the judge the ability to punish you at will.

People cheering, enjoying themselves, over criminals being punished by a system that is necessary to maintain law and order and which shouldn't be vengeful or malicious itself but apparently is. Revenge isn't just. oh.

The system isn't the one here beating up old men and acting like lunatics. Again - if you can't behave yourself, use the court-appointed attorney to speak for you. Everything this woman did to get her punishment was the direct result of her own actions. You can't expect everybody to be babysat like little children all the time - at some point people have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Hateful? Hardly - I was amused that this dumb person caused her own fate. It's no different than watching a video of some jackass bumping into other people's cars, driving recklessly, then rolling the car and getting stuck in it. They caused their own fate by being a jackass. It's basic karma 101.

This woman is obviously profoundly stupid, and likely unwell in many respects. So now it's the US's fault for not babysitting the entire population? Are you kidding me?

<useless drivel snipped>

As usual, seeking to blame someone else for the actions of this idiot that got her in the clink for 300 days. It's nobody's fault but her own. Nobody forced her to be disrespectful, nobody made her continue to be disrespectful when she was found in contempt... and so it's nobody's fault but her own when she has to deal with the results.

Less whining about poor little criminals, more accountability for their actions.

I thought the <snip useless drivel> summary was impressively good. Well done. Everything else was rubbish.

It is difficult when were referring to a woman who assaulted her grandfather.

Jud, aren't you glad you learned how to type? I noticed you on that typing thread. No other questions at this time.

My typing still has a long way to go; I seem to be stuck at the 110 wpm mark.

I would like to at some point start a kickstarter project to create the equivalent of the Microsoft-4000 ergonomic keyboard, but use cherry-mx microswitches on it instead. It's one of my favorite keyboards, but the dome switches really limit the upper end of my typing.

My take is the woman is stupid. Definitely deserves jail time for contempt of court. However, the judge went off his rocker too hard too. A judge is suppose to remain impartial and as unemotional as possible. Too much emotion will cloud good judgement. Unfortunately, the judge won't be reprimanded for his actions of behaving like a child almost as much as the woman.

Chances are that if the woman suddenly decides to be humble, that the terms will be reduced, as that is what oftentimes happens in situations like this (and also that is what happened in the 6 month ago instance of a woman smarting off to the judge).

The problem ultimately is that people need to learn to control their emotions, and I'd bet anything that this lady's emotions going out of control are what led her to assault the grandfather in the first place.
