Woman tried to go through security at the local courthouse with a keychain baton

I had jury duty 2 weeks ago and the first morning there I was waiting to go through security when the Sheriff instructing people what to put in the tray noticed that the woman in front of me (an older woman) had a mini collapsible baton on her key chain. He told her that this is an illegal weapon and that she could be arrested for simply having it. He said she could take it out to her car and leave it there but he advised her to get rid of it. Man, was she shaken by this.

I was kind of surprised he let her take it to her car. I mean, it's not like she tried to carry a gun into the courthouse but still.

Vista courthouse? I had jury duty there a few years ago, and they caught my small keychain multitool. I was a bit embarrassed. They were thorough, I have lost track of how many TSA checkpoints the device passed through without being flagged.

Yes, it was at the Vista courthouse and yes, they are thorough. My wallet, keys, cell phone, tablet, book all had to go into the x-ray machine and I had to walk through a metal detector.

I didn't even know those batons were illegal but I guess they are. Thankfully, I don't own one.

Why on earth would a little baton be illegal?

Is it because they are trying to crack down on impromptu street orchestras? Too many conductors in the kitchen? You need to be a licensed professional conductor in order to harness the raw power of the collapsible baton?

Of course that's not why.

It's to prevent an unsanctioned baton twirling gymnastics routine from disrupting the business of the court or presenting a danger to the public.

It's just common sense.

The last time I was on jury duty the lady in front of me grabbed my car keys out of the bin after it went through the x-ray device. I yelled at her and the security people rushed towards me. I was pointing at the lady and asked for them to stop her. She finally stopped and they had her open her purse and there were my keys. I don't know if she was just preoccupied or a professional thief, but she acted like it was no big deal.
