Had my knife out today. In the middle of a cornfield, and hear crashing in the brush. Huh, deer... A few seconds later I see the dog, and three others behind him. Pull my knife out and watch... The owner's lagging behind them, and behind her is another dog gimping along. They seem relatively well behaved, and don't care much about me so I sheath the knife, and watch. Exchange a couple words with the woman, and they keep on going with Otto(the gimp) bringing up the rear. He comes up to me, sniffs around, then goes to catch up with the rest 600' ahead.

Dunno what kind of dogs they were. They sorta looked like Danes, but were smaller. Sleek like a greyhound, but more stout and muscular. Not too mouthy, and seemed to listen ok. They weren't bad as far as dogs go.

Were the dogs hunting this deer?
Cuz thats fuckin illegal.
Nah. I don't think there were deer at all. That's what I thought when I heard the noise in the brush, but it was probably the dogs screwing around. They looked like working dogs of some kind, but for what, I don't know.

Description sounds like hounds.

No, not either of those. I tried a search for "hound", but didn't find anything that looked exactly like them, but I did find this ...

My search wasn't wasted :^D
Basset hounds have short legs, so I knew it wouldn't be that kind. Bloodhound?

I'm thinking it's some kind of sighthound...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sighthound

None of those are exact, but it's getting close. The Polish greyhound is very close, but I remember their heads being bigger. They were all colored the same, and looked mostly alike through various ages. That tells me they probably weren't some kind of weird bastard, and were a purebred something or other.

Dogs that have a taste for human blood tend to be violent despite retraining. General policy in all 50 states is to kill em. Its a bit simple-minded but nobody, not even PETA complains about this.

that's because PETA kills enough animals themselves to make most animal shelters look like sanctuaries.

If you don't feel pitbulls are comparatively more dangerous, you may as well say the same thing about riding motorcycles instead of driving in a cage.

Well, thats not the same thing.

Different breeds of dog behave differently, or not, thats the debate here.

Bikes are cars are completely different but driven by the same human being. Though you could also argue people of different mindsets are more inclined to a bike versus a car.

Pitbulls may be inherently more aggressive to a small degree or more apt to behave aggressively when trained to do so or treated with abuse or neglect, but at the end of the day what people continually fail to understand is no matter how much you train a dog, love a dog, or how long you own a dog, it is still an unthinking, primarily instinctual ANIMAL.

It is not your family member, it is not your friend, it is an animal that has been bred for thousands of years to serve the purposes of man, those purposes being mostly cosmetic or emotional today, and the dog believes it is part of a hunting pack with you as the alpha male or female. When you let it loose outside without a leash you are releasing a potentially dangerous animal into the public and despite all the years of love, attention, and training it may still attack someone with little or no provocation and you are 100% responsible.

Granted, those odds are low and the dog is more likely to be a nuisance to neighbors than anything else, but unless you'd like me running all over your yard naked and taking a piss or shit where I please then don't let your dog do it either.

Sick and tired of irresponsible dog owners.

Like some others earlier in this thread, I had a pit/lab mix. Absolutely the sweetest dog you would ever meet...around people. But put her in the presence of another dog and she was ready to kill. She was well socialized with other dogs (we adopted another dog at the same time, obedience training, dog parks, etc.) but her genetics and breeding could not be trained out of her, so we had to stop taking her to dog parks and she had to be leashed outside of the house at all times.

Even with that, I'd love to have her back.

Even with a gun, this guy could not stop the death of his wife by pit bulls on Christmas Eve:

http://www.kentucky.com/news/state/article191504879.html#storylink=cpy

A woman is dead and her husband is recovering from injuries after the couple were attacked by two pit bulls, police said.

The Bell County Sheriff's Office received a call of the pit bull attack Sunday before 10:30 a.m.., according to a press release. The attack happened on Highway 66 in the Wiser Branch Area of the county.

Once on scene, police found that a wife and husband had been attacked by two pit bulls. The woman died at the scene and the man was injured. The man was able to shoot both dogs. One dog was found dead the other ran away, police said. The dogs did not belong to the couple.

Thing is, if you "ban" Pitt bull's then those who currently own/use them for nefarious reasons will simply switch to a different breed, so then what?, have a 45lb weight limit for any K9?.

Liability insurance requirements for dog owners would suffice IMO

this is a good point, you can breed and/or train plenty of dogs for fighting.

Still the pattern of these incidents is often the same: get dogs for the wrong purpose, pick a race bred for fighting, and get multiple ones, which is stupid because dogs in a group behave like a pack of animals and are much less controllable.
