can you imagine a 150 pound cat that totally is flipped out and intent on killing you....its gonna be a bad ending.

Having been attacked by a 22 lb Siamese that was (semi) playing yes I can. Had a canvas-like fabric work shirt under a thick hoodie on and still bled profusely plus hoodie was destroyed.

Btw can't blame the cat (Zap) I was messing with him and kinda asked for it!

If I hear a dog, my knife is out. I've scared more than one dog owner who walked their unleashed dog near me(usually trespassing). Maybe I win, maybe I don't, but your animal's gonna be fucked up when it's over with.

You take out a knife anytime you come near a dog out and about wherever that is?

Where do you live, east bumblefuck Kentucky?

My lab/pit mix might lick your face to death. Is that what people are referring to a killer instinct? Death by doggie tongue?

I work outside on private property. Some people think they're entitled to use others people's property to walk their dogs since the owner doesn't have line of sight visibility to the whole thing. Other times are typical suburban yards, and some people don't feel they need to keep their precious puppy on their own yard. I'm always armed cause that's my right, and if I hear a dog bark getting closer, or something running towards me, my knife is in hand. That's assuming I'm not in the back country and carrying one or more machetes, which is of course preferable to a standard knife.

The hell is wrong with you two?

It says in TFA they were likely being bred for fighting, which means they were being bred for this. Don't blame a whole damned breed for the actions of its owner.

According to the CDC, pit bulls have been responsible for more than 70% of all fatal dog attacks over the last decade while only being 2% of the entire American dog population.

Ahhhh that makes more sense. Around here you walk past a dog being walked every couple of minutes.

I don't believe in keeping my dog off leash ever around where I live. He gets to go to dog parks often enough to run around.

Tough to argue with those numbers ... as I said even if we assume 80% are BS in some way (most likely not that high) they are still the most dangerous by a wide margin even to people.

Need more info on those statistics, such as which areas pits attack in.

Around these parts in the ghetto areas of urban centers, they are often raised as mean-ass guard dogs.

That's why I threw that 80% out there to cover all apologists ... point being even tossing out the vast majority of Pit-bull attacks they still have the lead in serious ones.

Personal experience with pitt's btw is 90% positive.

Oh no kidding!
I was a little stronger back then, 6'1" 240.
Those arm sleeves are designed to give a little so as to simulate an arm, and not break the teeth, etc. The shepherds hit so hard, the initial strike was like a 4' long 2x4 at a moderate swing. I say this with confidence, because we had a chunk of 2x4 there to illustrate the hit
Now fill in that hit with teeth on each side with enough bite force to squeeze through the reinforced sleeve.
Then there's the second and third and fourth hit in less than 3 seconds. The shepherds tend to " chop" rapidly, not bite and hold. The speed is incredible and you are trying to anticipate it.
The only dog to draw blood was this 114 pound shep that chopped up and off the end of the sleeve onto my upper arm before I had a clue.
Now these are not your average dog by any means, and the training is effective. A person can strategize about knives and punching or kicking an attacking dog and might have some success with an untrained animal. I think most people would be amazed at how fast they are, when it is their job. Our reactions are pitiful in comparison.

Yeah, I've had the arm guard on before and nothing really prepares you for that first hit! There were a few who were trained to basically hold on and throw their weight around to get you on the ground but you had to be in the full bite suit for that and after the "bite suit light" ordeal I passed. Even an untrained dog of that size and strength, if you are prepared before the attack then sure you might stand a chance. If you aren't prepared you are pretty damn fucked, a strong able-bodied man might survive the encounter but I'd wager a whole lot that the man comes out far worse than the dog. Its their instinct to go for the throat and once they have you on the ground that becomes much easier and once they have your throat it's pretty much game over.

But hey, he is superman and that kind of force with the teeth and gnashing while consciously mounting a counterattack. I'd like to say that I would do the exact same thing but far more likely I would roll into a ball and cover the important bits while hoping like hell he gets bored.

Last time I visited a shelter 90%+ of the animals there were Pit Bulls. This is not going to help their situation. I guess that you have to be a very “special” person to want to risk you and your familie’s lives having one or more of these animals around.

This is far more about the drastic increase of people keeping them as pets than it is about anything else. It's also related to the type of people who keep them as pets, whether then can or bother to give the dog proper healthcare (spay/neuter), and whether they can afford the pet in the long term. (Read as low income folks shouldn't be spending money buying pets..... but they do.)

God damn it. I'm trying SO hard not to throw this back with a quote about crime percentages in the US.

im tired of hearing about pit bulls, even the name of the breed is dumb. all people want is a mean dog or to brag that they have a mean dog but he is the sweetest thing and would never attack anything.

Typical arguments of pit owners when they are confronted by the typical monthly death of an owner at the hands of their pit bull:

a) It's not a real Pit Bull, it just looks like one
b) The owners were terrible people. If you raise them right (like I do), they won't kill you.
c) Small dogs have worse tempers (followed by anecdote about how amazingly nice and good with children their own Pit Bull is)

These dogs have been bred to fight and kill for decades if not centuries and they are very good at it. Most of the time they are fine around full-sized people, but put them around another small dog or small person and their instinct kicks in and they kill.

Thankfully they are pretty much exclusively a pet owned by dregs of society and most nice areas have already banned them. My area does not allow them to be walked in public.

To the pit owners in this thread making excuses for these dogs, how would you feel if your pit bull killed you and your fellow pit defenders decided to call you a terrible owner who abused their dog and didn't properly raise it? That's exactly what will happen if your dog goes insane. This woman is already being called a monster by Pit defenders in this very thread merely because she was killed.

Their defenders always break out the No True Scotsman argument.

such a beautiful animal.
You might be able to make that argument with the other guard/attack dogs, but pitbulls are one of the ugliest dogs not bred specifically to look stupid. It's those ugly pig eyes, which btw, that pic in the op has. It's not a pure pit, but it has some pit in it.

awesome

I have a 150lb blue male dane, so I know what you mean!

I wanted to go with the blue colored Dane but we didn't have a breeder available that was near by. Ended up falling in love with this guy, but maybe for the next one.

Hold my beer.

I'll adopt these misunderstood pooches and get them in line with lots of kisses, hugs and Halloween costumes.

I'll make sure they KNOW that I'm the Omega of the pack.

It's hard to get all of him to fit in one picture. He is the AT-AT of dogs

When I was a kid my neighbors had a great dane that looked just like that. I met the dog by accident one day as I was running through their yard rather than walking around the block to get to the next street. Came bolting around a corner and boom, almost crashed into him. I must have been about 5 at the time and he looked about 20 feet tall. Probably could have swallowed me in two bites. He let out a little *woof*, sniffed me and sat down to say hello and even then he was towering over my head. Sweetest dog in the world, he and I became good friends.
