Yes, the earning power per person in USD is lower in China but the cost of living in China or Asia is much much lower than in the US. Almost everything is cheaper in China than in US. For example, a nice shirt in US is about $20 but you can not say a similar shirt will cost $20 in China too.

On the side note, most of ATOTers that posted in this thread need to go out, especially travel to oversea and see the world and learn about other cultures and people. Some of the posts in this thread are so pathetic and sad.

No, I agree with Chris. It's Cantonese for "ghost (old) man" and is a loaded phrase. In Hong Kong and most of Canton it's used in ordinary speech to refer to foreigners, as opposed to the more polite expression of say "sai yahn." But it can carry a derogatory meaning behind it. So the more I think about it, "oriental" or "chinaman" is a satisfactory analogue for the term. The exact word or phrase isn't derogatory, but it has a history and sometimes implied meaning behind it that can carried with it.

I personally don't mind it too much, it's obvious with how it is spoken that it is meant as just an ordinary expression. But I have heard foreigners here that do mind it.
