When was the last time anyone you know was drafted...recently?

The draft is an option for in case we ever come to a time when we need defense and can't find enough voluntary enlistees, as it should be. There is currently no active draft, only required selective service registration. You can't abolish the draft, unless you want to risk speaking another language, at some point in the future, when we are conquered by a foreign country, because we didn't draft the soldiers we needed.

That 'option' is the highest possible tax that the state could possibly assess anyone. Nor is that tax necessary. Volunteer armies are vastly superior to slave armies.

WTF? There is no fucking way my daughter is signing up for this shit. Not a chance. I will drive her Canada myself before she is ever exposed to the meat grinder of war.

I believe that fits the definition of sexism. To not support gender equality.
Frankly, if there's a draft, Women should be fit to die along side us.

Let's abolish men's and women's sports and force all teams to be coed.

A lot of people seem to be confusing the issue of whether women (volunteers or draftees) should be assigned frontline military service with that of the draft. I say if anyone is subject to the draft, everyone should be. It will help keep down on the chickenhawks.

<--was personally subject to the draft during Vietnam era during a lottery year, lucked out with the right birth date.

How so? Having twice as many peasants to draft seems like it would encourage even more imperialism.

The chickenhawks starting the wars and reaping the profits don't have any skin in the game. They never did. Not during the Civil War, not during Vietnam and certainly not now either. There were always levers to pull to ensure the affluent kids were never subjected to risk.

Interesting how many people believe that we should be forced to sacrifice our children to the State. "For the greater good," of course.. which is the same argument that communists make.

Defense where, and from what? No one is ever going to attack continental USA, and if they did somehow there will already be tens of millions of locals with private arms ready. Maybe at some point in the distant future we'll have island disputes in the Pacific with China, but in that's why we have a strong missile defense. Maybe one of our military bases thousands of miles from home will be attacked by an enemy; let them have it and put an end to American world policing.

It's always the conservatives that claim they are for small government, yet support the death penalty and the draft.

I could respond with this:
Interesting how many people believe that we should look the other way and let other peoples children do our dirty work for us. Hey they volunteered so its all good.

Just saying.

Good. Why should only men have to risk life and limb at the whim of a government because of genetics they were born with that they had no control over?

I find it to be appallingly pathetic that our species still seems to be so infantile and undeveloped that this is deemed a suitable means for nations to resolve conflicts.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to resolve it. At some level, we're still primates that are the product of surviving an uncaring and harsh environment. Those instincts flavor our actions. Some of us don't care to acknowledge that, or some will try to preserve those behaviors out of some sense of tradition or historical preservation, and so will glorify war as something for "manly men" to look forward to, an honorable means to an end.

Like a bunch of infants trying to collectively figure out how to stop soiling their diapers, entirely unaware that they lack the muscle control to do so effectively. They can't solve the underlying problem because they can't envision its cause.
That's where we are. Our history is punctuated by periods of great violence, and many speak of the horrors and terrible human costs of war, yet we are constantly unable to fully refrain from it.

For the greater good? Some social systems can be well worth preserving. How much are we willing to sacrifice for that preservation? That is always the difficult question.

Women want equal rights then they should also be subject to an equal draft requirement just like men are.

The only way that humanity resolves its faults is through experience. Something bad enough happens and the collective memory of it remains as a caution for as long as those people who experienced it are still alive. Then people 'forget' and the next generation gets to do it all over again.
Which is why my biggest concern is that, very soon, there will be almost no one left alive who remembers the experience of global total war.

It doesn't help matters that in Russia there's propaganda being pushed to persuade the populace nuclear war isn't actually that bad.

If we actually USED the death penalty on a regular basis, it would significantly reduce the penal system budget.

And you only draft in time of war. That has nothing to do with big government or small government.
