LOL You guys should pop by the DC forums once in a while (yes we have women/girls too at least some )

I bet you all 10:1 that poof knows more about about computers than most of us guys ... I know she runs circles around me and most of the guys there at least

Oh and why don't more girls/women play UT huh? I just badgered a confession outta poof that she does, and Toolgirl too it seems... we need more girls/women that play UT damn it

I don't mean that people who don't use their computers the same way I do are dumb...nothing of the sort. I just think thereds is right in his observation.

Most guys don't wear dresses, doesn't make them stupid, just something that is.

People are free to do what they will, but this is an example of how genetically men and women truly are different. Guys and girls for the most part have different interests. Nothing wrong with that. No one should say "you can't do this cause you're a girl" but we can't say that everything should be perfectly equal for the sake of equality. Look at the ratio in AT or at an engineering school. I don't think it's because girls are st00pid, just most aren't interested in computers and engineering. Should an engineering school strive for a 50:50 ratio in an attempt at equality if only 5% of applicants are female? Of course not, yet some of them do just for the sake of PC.

Again, just like SmiZ stated, I didn't ever mention that girls who do use the computers for solitaire or chatting or typing up papers are dumb. And this wasn't even implied in any of my posts.

My problem with your post is that you used the word "most" as in "most women don't like using the computer for anything other the aforementioned reasons".

Again, maybe you need to expand your circle of female acquaintances.

Most of the women that I know not only play the hardcore games and use their computers for *gasp* things other than chat and Solitaire, but they've built their own computers.

I WOULD add "so there!" after that, but I thought it'd be childish.

Neener!

Bah....I'm a geek girl and proud of it. I know for a fact I know more about software AND hardware (not to mention networking) than 99% of the guys I know....I work as a tech much of the time, often backing up and solving problems MALE techs have no clue how to deal with or fix, and regardless of being a liberal arts major, I'm certainly not stuck on chatting and writing papers (though I do plenty of that too).

This is the kind of stereotype that kills respect of women as competent techs (and most of us who are have had to fight tooth and nail for the recognition), discourages women from entering a techie field or being willing to learn more about it (and be perceived as a techchikkie at all...because who wants to be an unfeminine woman?), and generally the type of statement that makes my life difficult *growl*

Isn't 'most' the most appropriate word?

I don't think I would have preferred to use any other.

Most women I see in the computer labs, which is where I used to work and, which is where I am right now gathering my data.

What other games besides Solitaire can you play in a computer lab (I assume you mean at school). Because here we can't install anything on the computers in the computer lab, which kinda rules out doing anything more fun besides chatting or playing little games like Solitaire.

You know based on what I see and my life experience men use women for mainly for entertainment and visual stimulation. Other then that they (the women) are basically useless to them. Why is that? Not like men are underexposed to the intelligence and sheer vitality of so many women....

Any reason or do most men just dislike being with women for anything other the aforementioned reasons?

Sorry, I couldn't resist, since you were diving into base generaliztions. So did you feel a little offended thereds?

Toolgirl - at one point, we could install starcraft, warcraft, quake etc on computers here. Now, ofcourse, thats all gone due to changes in user privileges.

My sis is turning into a computer science major. She's learning to code and loves it. Unfortunatly she doesn't have a clue about hardware. Her computer is a piece of cheap celeron trash and she doesn't know any better. I'm going to see about building her a T'birdy over the summer.

OY!!!

I resemble that remark!!!

I use a computer constantly... Geez... I think that I am practically veined into it at times.... I am at one all day at work(For example: NOW)... And when I come home I get back onto one...

But I know when to quit and read a book...

As for most women doing whatever ... okay generally women dont like blood and violence on tv .. why do you think they would get on their computers and play it??? As for me ... I chat online (although not near as much as I did before i met E_mc_2) and I email ... but for being obsessed with solitaire .. i havent played solitaire in a couple of years probably .. i do occassionally get fixated on tetris (the normal or the adult version) or the same game ... But I also use my computer for learning (ie the web) and I do a lot of graphics .. I also found my future husband and the chapel that we are getting married at on the web (not to mention some of the honeymoon atire) ... As for the hardware and software stuff .. I actually went to school for networking ... I ended up hating the school (not the course) and left .. havent been back ... even though E_mc_2 keeps telling me I should... just not where I want to be right now ...

There's no argument TO settle. You're simply guilty of assuming that the females you've run across in your little computer lab microcosm are representative of the average female computer user. And you're wrong.

See? No argument at all.

I work at 5 computer labs that have an average of about 40 computers. Thats over 200 users at a particular point in time. Microcosm? I think not.

You're basing your opinion of the computer usage/knowledge of the entire female population on your biased casual observations of 200 teenage girls in college computer labs?

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooookay.

Sigh.

It's not all teenage girls.

Teenage, young adult, and some old folk who do frequent the labs.

I would expect you to know the typical demographic of a college.

Let me 'sigh' now.
