We could be mean and say the same thing about you guys out there. That only less good-looking men are heavily into computers.

yes, that's true toolgirl. however, it's a bit more 'allowed' for guys to be into computers or how to say it...plus I think almost all guys have an 'inner geek' hehe also, the thing is that guys won't mind you saying that so haha

Damn you guys need to go out of your room and look at the world!

Just a little story to let you catch my drift:

A friend of mine studies programming at a college here in Oslo, and there are too many cute/pretty/sexy/damn good lookin' girls/women in his class to mention!! As a matter of fact three of them are maybe the best lookin' women I've ever seen!

Before you guys offend anyone else I suggest you go out and actually EXPERIENCE the world before you try to make statements about what is and is not *fact*.

Dear god this statement makes me MAD. I can't even come up with the words to describe how angry a stereotype like that makes me. It's that idea that turns women away from being computer geeks (cuz like I said above...who wants to be an unfeminine woman) and it's that idea that makes beautiful computer women either feel as if they must be ugly, not to mention that stereotype is what makes people (men) scream that any techchick who does post her pic and is even remotely good-looking must not be posting a picture of herself.

Okay. You boys win.

All women are simpering eyelash-batting mindless little creatures sitting around on overpowered computers playing Solitaire while waiting for some big strong man to come along and show them how to validate their entire existence by admiring his vastly superior technological ability.

Any woman who does NOT fall into this category is either a) a man-hating lesbian with a hormonal imbalance b)incredibly ugly or c) both.

That about cover y'all's view on the subject?

Sad. Very sad.

Some of you guys are so pathetic. I hope one day you little boys can grow up and lose your inane and sexist thoughts. I cannot believe when we are in the 21st century, that you would actually see this kind of male chauvanistic pig behavior. It's sad when men feel they have to run women down and stereotype them, to make up for their own insufficencies.

I just keep faith that there are plenty of men in the world who are not afraid of strong intelligent women, and don't feel the need to whip their weewees out and yell "I am man, hear me oink." everytime they are around one.

BAH, now as a male I take offense from that unxpurg8d but having followed this thread I completely understand where you're coming from ... Don't let them get off that easy! Continue educating them and they'll learn (eventually)

Take care and know that at least some if not many have more open minds than this thread seems to show of the male population at AT

A very ashamed male member of the AT community

Unexperged,

You are overreacting.... I made it clear that my GF is a very capable engineer... I simply pointed out that how she uses her own pc in her own time is somewhat "typical" of many women who aren't all that interested in geeking out.

It's my own experience, not a total generalization..

As to our friend from Oslo... I don't find that surprising at all... In many parts of the world, being a geek and being smart about computers is seen as a TURN ON.... since it has the potential for good job security, high wages, and just generally smarter people to deal with.

In our United States, superbowl, baywatch culture, I'm not surprised at all that being geeky or nerdy is seen as a turn-off.

Haha... so you're saying that *most* men in the US don't like their women smart?!? And that this is something foreign and strange? Hmmm, weird that I haven't noticed that in most of the guys from the US I "talk" to here on AT... but to each his own... if all you look for in a woman is boobs, butt and a nice face feel free to lose out on a whole lot of fun, altho' you at least seem to have a split mind on this issue since your GF is an engineer and that must mean she's pretty smart... doesn't it?

I find it strange that you start to generalize again, only this time you generalize the men in your country, not the women. Why not give them (the entire population in the US of A) the benefit of the doubt, and assume that they are "better" than you think they are? At least until you've actually gotten to know more than a small fraction of a percent of them!?!?

Just my $0.02 but then my thoughts might be too alien for you to grasp so just try to look at the world with an open mind ok? You'll be surprised by the number of intelligent, beautiful and wonderful people you'll meet if you only approach them with your nice side first

Gunfighter, you're not reading very carefully, or possibly you've misunderstood something.

I'm not overreacting, I'm overexaggerating to make a point. What amazes me is that after all the posts in this thread, you STILL miss the whole issue, which isn't whether or not your girlfriend is intelligent or not, but that you can hardly state "how she uses her own pc in her own time is somewhat "typical" of many women who aren't all that interested in geeking out" with any validity if you haven't stated what you're basing the word "many" on. One woman is NOT "many".

I really don't care that your perception of the attractiveness of a woman seems to be inversely affected by the fact she's computer literate. That wasn't the initial issue, and that's YOUR problem. The whole thread could've been generalizations about men and their interest/lack of interest in the inner workings of computers and I would've been just as passionate about people not making all-encompassing statements based on just their personal experience.

The only other way I can think of to get my point across is to find some crayons and very patiently draw a diagram - and I just don't have the energy left for that so hopefully this finally clarifies my stance for you.

Mommy, the mean lady made fun of my pee pee!

I would let you see what I edited out, but I would have you and all the other women so unbelieveable turned on that I would never have a moment of peace for the rest of my life. Not that I'd mind too much, but I need my sleep

Actually, Unexperged, although my example started out with my own GF... I can honestly say that I have NEVER in all the time I have worked in computers both as a student and as a communications engineer met a woman who wanted to geek out on PC's the way that a LARGE number of my male associates/co-workers/friends do.

Maybe that's still too small of a generalization for you, but I have to agree with thereds that most women (in my limited experience) are not all that interested in being a hardcore tweaker.

I think that there's plenty of data to back up this point of view (female membership in forums like this one being rather limited is one of them)... but apparently you are more interested in how naughty the thought of this is, so you immediately slap down any such discussion as "stereotyping".

Well, I was going to point out that my previous post was simply to point out some common sociological differences between men and women. I never said either view was better or exclusive to a single sex, and I did not intend to insinuate that. However I think I'll be better off to just leave Unx and Itk alone together...
By the way, I've wanted an old Fiat X/19 since I saw one sitting immobile (as is their natural state) at my mechanic's, when those little buggers ran they handled nicely I hear. Yes, despite what I said about men commonly being "into" cars, I don't go much beyond changing my car's oil / sparking plugs / plug wires / battery / bulbs, anything time consuming gets dropped on the mechanic.
