All my mom does on the computer is talk to people about Michael Bolton and play solitaire.

I don't just use it for the reasons you stated.

The computer has too many uses to use it only for chatting and writing papers.

Wow this is an old thread. It seems like a lot of people in here took what thereds said personally. As far as I read all he stated was that guys tend to be more involved with more aspects of computing than girls (in his experiences). It's not a statement that I would disagree with and yet a lot of people made the assumption that he made it in the spirit of a "males are better/smarter than females" statement which I did not get at all when I read it.

but... I don't wanna start this thread all over again so the above is JUST gibberish and does not reflect my opinion in any way.

Just take Q3 and make the storyline take place in the mall...

I go to a tech school with 12,000 students and I can't think of one girl I know who's interested in computer hardware or tweaking or warez or anything more in depth.

Not a bad thing, just an observation.

You don't get out much

Aside from that, those women use the computer for what they need it for... using their time to concentrate on their own areas of future professional expertise. If everybody loved hardware and tweaking there wouldn't be anybody left to pay us

See if you can find a female who doesnt like solitaire and taco bell. I dont like to stereotype, but Its what I have noticed, all girls I talk to like one or both to the extreme. My G/F could get by with webtv. Email and chat, and solitaire, thats all the big box w/ bright lights is used for.
It could be a 486 for all she cares, as long as these three things can be done.

I never play solitare and I hate Taco Bell... next question ?

People using computer labs are generally end users who either don't have their own systems or are a bit far away from hoime and need to send email. It stands to reason that you'll see such people typing papers, sending email and engaging in chat.If I could only access a computer a few times per week, that's what I'd be doing too

I would think that college-age girls in a computer lab would be the more "techie" representative portion of the girls as opposed to the girls who have their pc's in their dorms and are less likely to be engineering majors. Could be wrong of course

There are exceptions to every rule. You knew that, didn't you?

I think to say that women aren't as familiar with computers isn't exactly true. I mean, take your average guy, take away his games and sit him in front of a computer. He will do the same thing that women do on the machine. He'll chat up, post of bbses, snatch a few mp3s and change his wallpaper a few times. Do women and men have different tastes? Yup, I learned that in kindergarten, doesn't mean anything. So does playing games=computer power user? Definitely not. I spend my day coding up utilities in any number of programming languages, tweaking my development servers, etc. I haven't touched a game in months. Do guys play more games that girls? Yup, that could be because most games are marketed for men than women. Honestly, does blowing off limbs using a million polygons for the little details and pixel shaders for the blood really sounds all that feminine to you? On top of that, the best web engineer I have ever met is a female. She's damn cute too and she just pwns me. Some of the best software developers I know are female and they all posses "mad 1337 skillz" by any definition of the word. You can say that, most women aren't that comfortable with the machine, but that's true of guys too. Go to the gym and I'll best most of the guys there wouldn't know the difference between make clean and make world. No one expects them too, but to make a blanket statement about women like that isn't true. I think what we're seeing is that guys spend more time on the machine because guys spend more time playing games and crap.

my 2 cents.
