I've been looking at creating a gaming server for some games (Minecraft, Terraria, L4D2,etc) i'm just wondering what all should I look to do in order to run a flawless server? The only issue I forsee is the 1mb upload of Hawaii.

This would be my first server and I have no idea where to start. i'm willing to spend $500 for one if we need to bump the price i'll see what I can do.

Take your X6 1090T and throw 4GB of RAM at it. Add a cheap disk and an operating system, and you'r about set.

Then, buy an I5 2500k, board, and re-use your 8GB of RAM and remaining hardware, and upgrade your desktop.

Call it a win.

I see what your saying. Would I need a new GPU for the gaming server or is it all CPU based?

It's all CPU based. Really all you need is some reliable hardware and a decent Internet connection. One word of warning though: software issues contribute much more to downtime that hardware issues. So don't monkey around with the settings once you've got them working!

is this a public game server you're talking about? because 1mb up will only allow for a couple of people online at a time.

Honestly, the upload is just for friends for now. Once i'm off the island the internet will be alot better. I'm just trying to get something down that I can take and plug in anywhere.

Latency may kill your friends, unless they're local to you in HI. Do what mvbidhead said ... RAM CPU and DISK speed play an important role in your server, but if the upload is low, and latency is high, you will run into other issues right there.

I would add 16GB of ram to the x6. If you are going to be running more than one server at a time you will need more than 4GB of ram.
