Won't Recognize CDROM Drive

Bought a new hard drive, and began installing it. Using the Maxtor Utility Disk and Win98 Start Up Disk. When it gets to the point where its time to set up my CDROM Drive it won't recognize it.

Swapped back in my old drive (which was working with the CDROM drive before I tried to install the new one). Now that won't recognize the CDROM drive either.

Just a straight boot off the start-up disk won't recognize the CDROM drive. D/L the "Ultimate" Boot-up disk. Nothing.

I've swapped 3 different drives -- the Memorex 48X, a Plexor 8/4/32A, and a Goldstar 20X drive.

Regardless, I keep getting the same "No Drive Present" message and the drivers aren't loaded (worst part is, the device is listed as a Primary Master upon boot up).

Now I have no access to my CDROM drive at all.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the ribbon cable and power to both drives? Also, jumper settings...are they right on both the HDD and CD-ROM as far as master and slave?

I'm guessing you're using the HDD as primary master, and the CD as secondary master. Maybe try the CD as primary slave with the HDD the primary master to see if it's the ribbon cable on the second channel (or maybe even the secondary controller.) If the CD drive's getting power (check the LEDs) and the cables good, I don' have any ideas.

Thanks for the reply. I have the IDE enabled in the BIOS (I'm running the KT7-Raid, so both are enabled).

The HDD (using the old one now) is set as master, and on its own cable.

The CD-ROM is also set as master and on a separate cable. I switched cables and didn't make a difference. I made the CD-ROM the slave and it didn't work. I moved it from the primary to the secondary IDE and it still is not being recognized.

If I load it up on Win98 on my old setup, I get bluescreens giving me errors with, what I'm guessing is, SCSI drivers "VxD ...."

Does this make any sense?
