I realize that I am probably late to the party on this one, but in case some of the many mazda3 owners on this forum haven't heard about this yet...
I read about this on mazda3forums. If you have a 2006+ Mazda3 you can unlock the fuel computer by doing the following:
1) Make sure that the radio is set to turn on when you start your car.
2) With the key in the OFF position, Hold down the CD and AM/FM buttons, then start your car. Keep the buttons held down until you see DIS ON show up on the radio display.
3) Next time you start up your car your fuel computer will be functional. Switch between functions using the Set button. You can go back to viewing the clock by pressing the Clock button.
This would probably work by turning the key to ACC rather than starting the engine, I'm not sure.
Anyway, the above procedure worked like a charm for me. Apparently my average speed over the last 19000 miles is 39 mph.
