Since I've worked with woods since I was old enough to walk I may be of some help. There are some clear advantages with working with wood in general. Relatively easy to work with, good strength to weight ratio, and of course the look. Issue number one is a fire concern. As other posters have said, using another case inside is an option, but it limits your options. If you stay with wood you are opening up to lots of issues. I'd avoid oilly woods, like cider, as that would be a real pain to clean up.
If you want to go the all wood route, consider using two layers. Use something light and ugly, like pine, on the inside. Then for the look you could go with a thin layer of whatever you'd like. This would make it lighter, cheaper, and still have a nice look. If you make it out of solid walnut, you'll throw out your money and your back moving it. Consider how dry the wood is. This is the most overlooked aspect in woodworking, and is even more important in demanding projects like this. Kilns often dry wood out to much, and after you buy it will suck up moisture. Some nice 1/2 inch (reality 3/8) paneling would be great for the outside. As far as tools go, the more the better. A table saw would work, but 10 minutes with a radial arm saw would do your cutting easiest. A nice 45 degree angle cut for the corners could make it look great. A drill and a jigsaw or router would also help, and a router would let you do some fancy things. Again, the right tools would make your job much easier and have a better product.
Sorry for the rant. I have never made a wood case, but have made tables, etc, forever. I am still dreaming about building my dream computer desk. Good luck.
