I took driver's ed at the start of the summer and we used an automatic dodge 2001 car, don't remember the name. That was very easy, I even drove the highway for half the time on the second day!

Anyway, I will be getting my dad's Honda Accord from the early 90's thats a manual. So I've practiced it with my dad about 3 times now. I'm still getting used to how much gas I should use when starting from neutral to first gear, but other than that its pretty easy.

Those of you who drive a manual, do you have any tips for going from neutral to first? The problem I had was that I wasn't giving enough gas. Yesterday when I started giving enough gas, I gave a little extra so the tires were skidding from the ground a little as they spun fast, hehe.

One more question, why is it that we only use first gear and second gear just a little to like 2000rpm or so? I know this is a horribly mofo bad comparison, but in races, they go up to like 70 or 80 in first gear! Thats have 5 or 6 gears...

The red sign for danger only is marked at like 7000 or 8000rpm in the honda, so why don't we take it to like 5k or 6k rpm for a faster start? That would use more gas, right?

Don't be doing 5k-6k launches right after you got your license.. you're going to peel out and get a ticket from some cop.

And constantly reving to 5-6k in 1st/2nd will wear out your engine, transmission, and clutch much faster than 2-3k.

I shift around 3.5-4k in every gear.. then again, I've got a 7600 rpm redline

it saves gas and wear and tear to shift at lower points.. that being said, every engine is different. A large v8 in a truck or whatnot might redline at like 4 or 5k...

depends on the engine and 'feel' of the car

in my auto, i have realised that getting the car to shift at about 3k rpm from 1st to 2nd, and a lil less in 2nd to 3rd, gives me the best gas mileage. manual would be the same, mine redlines however at 5-6k. and some v8 autos that gm makes have no visible redline (just cuz the engine is set up to shift b4 then) but the lower rpm, the less fuel usage, but the slower you go. yes in my car, the little difference matters, yours it might not.

99 jimmy w/ a 3.4 340 (right? a 3/4 340 = 4.3l v6?)

My Jeep is a manual and thats the first thing I had to learn, only practiced once on the streets but got the feel of it in less then 30 minutes so simple, so easy.
