Are you including bundled software in factor?

I wonder if self built system is still cheaper after purchasing all the softwares enclosed with Dell in retail package.

a lot of times it still comes out cheaper. i build them for spare cash in college. i've got quiet a following in the Bay Area small buissness crowd. build one every couple of weeks, and you make more than working at starbucks.

edit: you gotta have a lot of headroom on your credit card to get parts before you're paid, though.

a lot of times it still comes out cheaper. i build them for spare cash in college. i've got quiet a following in the Bay Area small buissness crowd. build one every couple of weeks, and you make more than working at starbucks.

What about the operating system? You aren't selling the hardware all put together that doesn't have any OS on it are you?

Adding WinXP would easily add up $200, unless you have vendor license and has access to OEM version to sell with system you build.

Yup, Windows XP Home and Office 2k Premium (OEM from newegg and directdeals). I didn't bundle stuff like Music match or dell movie or any of that crap. But the system I built was better than the one I configured on dell: it had a VIVO MX (compared to TV MX), and a 3 yr warrenty on Monitor and Multifunction fax (courtesy of BB), and it was faster (XP 1800 compared to P4 1.7GHz).

Building systems is a great way to earn some $$$. I also just got done building one for a friend's dad that got me $100 cash.

edit: Yes, I've gotta credit card with $5000 limit on it to help with capital.
