If possible, get the Athlon 64 3000+ ($146, highly overclockable if needed) along with a Radeon x800XL (around $260, much, much better perfomance) for an additional 60 bucks to your current total.

The x800XL card, for that price, rivals the perfomance of the Geforce 6800 ultra as long as you don't go into 1600*1200 resolution - you can't beat that for price/perfomance.

Unless you're looking for extreme gaming, 2GB Ram is overkill, especially since you're not aiming for a high end graphics card. 1GB Ram with the x800XL would do great to play all the recent games in max settings at 1280*1024. You could always add another stick later on.

Also, I'd say go with a more well known brand for RAM, since I've no information on GeIL. You could get Crucial/Corsair/OCZ value RAM for that same price.

Someone did his research..Great components. The x800xl would be quite an improvement over the x800gt, however, and the 3200's and 3000's overclock about the same, so going with a 3000 wouldn't really be a loss in performance if you're overclocking. If you are overclocking, I'd suggest a Thermalright XP-90 heatsink. Ewiz.com does have the OEM 3200+ Venice for about $135, so if you're getting an aftermarket heatsink anyway, that'd be the way to go.

Well if you had the money I would go with the x800xl, but it's not necesary for the games you have listed. I would go with 2x1GB of Corsair Value Select instead of the Geil. I would also save a bit by droping down to a 3000+. The Antec Sonata II case would be a better choice for you, great case and it comes with a 480W Smart Power PSU.

wrong.

the Antec Sonata 2 is not that quiet as many people say it is and the power supply is a 450W Smart Power, not 450W

the Fortron power supply and the Antec 3000 case are much better

i do agree on the x800xl

Except in games optimized for OpenGL (with minimal difference, OpenGL is nVidia territory), the x800XL outperforms the 6800GT, sometimes on par with the 6800 Ultra, all for the same price.

Dude you can get a x800xl for $245 not $280, and if you take a look at some of the benchmarks the x800xl is slightly better in performance plus runs MUCH cooler!!!!

There where 3200+ at EWiz.com for like 140$(ish) shipped a week or two ago. If you can find it for that price i'd get it over 3000+ JUST because it has 1 extra multipler.

OOPS my bad, sorry.

PCI-E x800xl's are like $275 you are correct, I would recomend that over the 6800 though. The x800xl runs much cooler!!! and it also has a slight edge performance wise.

Don't listen to this guy telling you to get a refurb x800pro. I would not trust refurbed stuff, and the x800pro isn't really worth it. Take a look at the x800GT new, it's a decent card and won't cost you too much.

Well buy one new for 200$ at ZipZoomFly.com. X800 Pro is a great card IMO. Overclocks well past the XTPE's speeds (580/560 here). buying a x800GT your basicly buying a worse card than 6600GT. Buying a X800Pro your buying a card thats as good as 6800GT till you throw some AA/AF on it... X800Pro for 180-210$ is a great budget gaming price IMO.

And sorry upon further rereading of your post i'd suggest you please look into what you told this guy.

No an x800GT is actually better then a 6600GT, take a look at the benchmarks. I would go for a x800xl or if I couldn't afford it, drop down to a x800GT then upgrade to something else in the future. The x800pro is a waste of time, take a look at some of the reviews of it.

imo, 1gb fast ram beats 2gb value any day. 2gb is a total waste of money, especially for what you're doing. get some ocz overclocking ram. also, get a 3000+ and overclock it, that will save you some cash.
