What worst is that $23K in income tax that I pay, and to get $9~10K back I have to pump more than $45K into various government tax shelter programs, and I haven't taken medical into it yet.

The gross pay looks great on paper but in reality I don't have much more take home than the guy that make 1/3 of my pay rate.

PS. American cries about taxes, wait till they have to pay Canadian taxes.

They included a lump sum for my living expenses in the check though. Those got taxed into fucking oblivion (35%+ easily) but thankfully they worked it out so that, after taxes, I received the exact amount. Somehow, travel expenses slipped by :hmm:

It's good that you're starting with an internship. I did the same when I was in high school (I had an internship as my first job too). I then paid my way through undergrad with summer internships. Making money is great.

The tax and deductions are only going to get worse, so it's good that you're starting off with an internship salary. It'll prepare you for the sticker shock later in your careers.

Felt like an old man when I considered what I'll do with the money I save from the internship. Two years ago I'd probably have just ordered some PC upgrades and been flat broke for the rest of the week.

My daughter, now 17, got a job almost a year ago (still there today) and she said the same thing...it's much harder for her to spend her money earned than the money that was "once handed" to her.

Don't go crazy on it. Since you are starting out you should get into the habit of this.

Setup direct deposit, then get a savings account and have automatic transfer happen the day after your pay cheque gets deposited. If possible, transfer half the pay cheque.
