Not trying to rain on anyone's parade as these cards look like an excellent deal, but I saw this thread over at XS and thought you guys might be interested.

So they're GTX's that were too crappy to be reference GTX's and got sold for about half the price?

Ouch indeed.

At least there's the step-up, life-time warranty. Besides, they seem like they do fine if left at stock.

True. At least there is the warranty to fall back on.

I believe they're saying they are GTX's but that the RAM didn't pass (er, hold up) at GTX speeds. So perhaps they undervolted it a bit and clocked it down.

If true, definitely not a hot deal.

EDIT: Also it appears the Samsung chips get blazing hot even at stock speeds...?

It looks like EVGA may be trying to get rid of all the returned cards they got back when the 7900 cards were having the sudden death problems.

Evga's lifetime warranty is top notched though, but i wouldn't be too happy about shipping the cards back and fourth after paying for supposely a new card

Whoa, what a surprise... So, they really aren't selling GTXes for half price...

I called this one last week:

...that being said, if you get a good one (or don't mind having to return a couple) it can be a sweet deal. I guess if I was going to purchase one I would like to know a bit more about the origins of the card... I don't think that they are refurbs though, I'm pretty sure that it isn't legal to sell something that isn't strictly new without informing the customer.

This isn't surprising.

These GTOs are basically binned 7900 GTXs.

Ones that didn't make the cut.

In this case, it's because of crap RAM.

I don't think it's so bad when they're backing it with a lifetime warranty

Is the issue only by EVGA or also the MSI has issues? The MSI is supposed to have 1.1 ram

That makes so much sense. That has to be it.

wasn't evga the only company to have 7900s die on them? if that is true, then these 7900GTOs are the product of that fiasco. thats kinda sad to see evga do that.

Sapphire X1900XT 256MB $239 at Chiefvalue. Nuff said.

I think it was a better value in the first place from a speed and IQ prospective and now with this garbage from evga. no brainer.

Check this out guys

Posted by someone: This all sounds like a good way to get rid of some 7900GTX stock right before the G80 Hits which my forum famous crystal ball said long ago would be early to mid November. Just some food for thought 4 ya guyz

Posted by Lord_Exodia: Not quite. Close, however. The 7900GTX will still sell after the DX10 cards are released, albeit for less. The GTO cards are the Samsung based cards that had the memory problems. The current gen 7900GTX cards are Infineon based. That is why the GTO is clocked at 660 on the memory. They can guarantee that clock. 800 is iffy at best. Still, a great deal and a good way to get rid of the suspect stock of cards they have.

http://www.evga.com/articles/317.asp

Most people experienced the issue a few weeks into their ownership. So, getting 800 MHz today does not guarantee you get that ability down the road.

It is a simple scenario. You are EVGA with a bunch of these brand new cards with Samsung memory sitting in a warehouse. Most of the cards will do 800 plus on the memory, but, the ones that did not caused a PR nightmare back in April/May and caused a big RMA headache. So, what do you do? Sell them at the minimum guaranteed memory clock that any of the GTX cards could handle, even with the memory problem at a bargain price. Which, BTW, was right around 1300 Mhz (where have we seen that memory clock?) That brings us to today and the limited release GTO.

EVGA did this same product intro with the 6800 LE. They upped their minimum standard for the 6800 Ultra to 425 MHz. What to do with the 6800 Ultra cards that cannot handle the 425 core clock? 6800 LE. It was simply a remarked 6800 Ultra and also one heck of a deal.http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1104346&page=7

Looks like ATi is getting my money. Too bad though, I was really hoping to switch to Nvidea this year. But after my X800GTO dying from the x850 mod I'm staying away from the 7900GTO.

Isn't different than the first generation X1800 XL's (just like the one I got). They are early, un-stable X1800 XT's. The Core can't go higher than 545 Mhz to 550 Mhz without crashing the system or hanging it even with proper voltages. But the first XL's have the XT's Memory (although at lower voltages, and different circuitry, so not to reach 680+ Mhz without a single issue, but physically and technologically speaking, the Memory is the same).

The 2nd generation XL's Cores were "fixed", as I've heard, and read.

Don't worry even ATi is willing to sell crap (or should I say un-finished or un-completed products) for profit. Not to mention that in R520's case, it had to be rushed to finally come out in "due" time after all the delays, exactly because of technical issues regarding stability with the Cores, anyone remembers ? I do.

Looks like it may be the vregs and not the Samsung chips themselves. I'm starting to wonder, after reading this, and looking at the fact that the vregs on my X1900GT get a lot hotter than the GPU, if we shouldn't start worrying more about cooling vregs rather than the ram itself.

I KNEW something was up, everyone was jumping on 7900GTO with no benchmarks to backup the performance claims...
