When working from home we use an Avaya softphone which is kinda annoying as it's not as fast to answer since you need to actually move the mouse over to it and click to answer, vs just picking up receiver on your desk, but it's a compromise to be able to work from home.

At the office we have Nortel Meridian desk phones. Probably the most bullet proof phone system ever.

I heard rumours they want to get rid of that system though, and move to Webex. So maybe at some point we won't have desk phones anymore. I don't know how that's going to work as far as getting outside calls though, it's more of a collaboration tool for internally.

I hope they do an accurate inventory of their POTS line needs and consider life safety. I've seen a lot of virtual phone pushes that cost way more money than expected because they completely forgot they need a POTS line for the fire panel, security system etc and didn't account for some sort of battery backup to have at least a couple things work if the power goes out

Oh yeah for sure. They would still keep POTS lines I'm sure for those things. We provide POTS service so it's technically "free".

Though there is still a downside to relying on the computer for the work phone as there's more variables. Like if the office loses power we don't have much backup for our PCs. A couple minutes at most. At least with desk phones you still get power from the PBX room.

We do have a generator but I've seen plenty of instances where it did not start right away.
