do you drive before you bill your company?

I don't feel right about filing for reimbursement of any kind unless I get up to $50. But when driving it's tricky, this week I drove about 40 miles to a meeting. I am not going to bill them because, I think it is too little.

How about you guys ? do you bill for every work related mile except going to and back from work ?

It depends. When I was at my last job, I felt fairly under compensated salary wise, so yes, I billed every single mile.

At the job before that (because I was still in College), and at my current job, I'm happy with what I make, so no, I wouldn't/didn't bill every mile - only long distances.

It's $.485 per mile per IRS, but companies don't have to follow it. Also, make sure when calculating your mileage, you deduct off what it normally takes you to get to work. For instance, if, roundtrip, your meeting was 40 miles and, roundtrip, your work is 30 miles, you can only claim 10 miles.

It really depends on the person.. There are meetings where I work that I'm supposed to submit a time sheet for - $26 per hour for those meetings. In 7 years, I've yet to submit one. Most of the meetings are 1/2 hour to an hour. There are other people I know who have yet to fail to submit a sheet for one of those extra meetings.

But what If I live 30 miles south of the company and the meeting is 40 miles north of the company? How does that figure in?

I don't make a big deal out of it as long as it's in-state... the furthest I'd ever be asked to drive is like 35 miles.

I billed mileage per company policy...

Anything over your normal commute.

My normal commute was 35 miles round trip.

If I drove to an office closer to my house.... nothing got billed.

If I drove to an office that was a 50 mile round trip, I billed 15 miles.

So it always paid to go into the office first when feasable.

Edited for math error.. oops.

I don't have to drive often with a personal vehicle for work, but when I do, we get reimbursed at 0.30 ? per Kilometer or about $0.70 per mile

You'd be driving for a total of 140 miles round trip. Typical round trip mileage is 60. You submit for 80.

He means more like the example where your work is 30 miles north and the site is 30 miles east. In that case, you get squat because it's not longer than your normal commute.

SO I take it as go with ... how you feel about it.
Considering I was out of the office for 2 hours on a beautiful day like this, I am not going to bill.

my company policy does not care what your regular commute is if you are driving to and from the airport, then I bill for every mile driven from my house to the airport.
