Workgroup AND Domain on the same computer???

Is there a way to set up a profile(s) on a laptop computer this way?

I have a laptop that travels to other networks. When it is at home, it is a member of a domain. But when I travel, 90% of the networks that I encounter are simple Workgroups. Is there a way to set up a profile(s) to match the different networks? Basically, allow a computer to be a member of a domain AND a workgroup depending on which profile is selected at boot. It gets irritating to demote the computer to a workgroup, and then have to re-promote it back into the domain when I get home.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe when you choose to logon, you can edit the "Log On to:" entry box to not log on to a domain, and only log on to your local machine. That should avoid it from trying to look for a domain controller and defaults back to like being on a workgroup.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, even if I log on using a local account, the computer is still a member of a domain, and still uses the same settings as a domain. (ie. ip address, default gateway, etc)

While at home, I want to be able to log into the computer, and access the domain. But when I travel, the computer information needs to change. (Domain private IP "10.x.x.x" vs Workgroup private IP "192.168.x.x")

Any help with the new info?

I don't think this will work, but I don't have a NT, 2000, or XP machine at home with me right now to test it on. Have you tried setting up different users, and then logging on to the local machine? Like I said I am pretty sure that the machine is assigned on the domain and not just the user. Also maybe the harware profiles in the system menu can change from domain to workgroup. I think the main problem here isn't in fact the domain/workgroup problem, it is changing the IP address depending on which location you are at.

Also you should be able to setup the computer so that you can run two IP's at the same time. As long as your home IP does not conflict with the network IP's. Then maybe you can bind the IP's to one domain and the other to workgroup. Again I don't have a machine to test this on so I could be totally off base.

You should be able to do it, but I don't want to speculate. Instead, I can test it out tonight - very very late tonight...

The problem is...on a domain model, your rights and permissions are stored on the server. (ie. my laptop can access any other hard drive on the network if there have been files/folders shared)

On a workgroup model, the sharing of files and folders is handled per computer. (ie. to access one computer I need a user name and pass, but to access a different computer will require a different name and pass for that machine)

Which brings me back to the original question. How can a profile be created to set the machine to a domain or workgroup on boot?

I know profiles can be created for different hardware configurations (ie. PCMCIA 56k modem vs 10/100 NIC). How can this be changed to fit my needs?

And thanks to all who are and have been helping. It is appreciated.
