I'd say best buy isn't the safest place to work, seeing as how someday, consumers like me will rise up against their evil corporate tyranny in an orgy of horrendous store destroying violence. The isles will run red with blood. And those blue shirts.... will be purple.

LOL

I can ask my buddy who works there, (I haven't really talked to him since before x-mas, but he liked it then).

I think it would suck. Especially after your shirt turns purple. However I hear you can get a pretty good discount on their crap if you are a BB employee,.

I know a guy that works at a BestBuy... he enjoys it. a freakish amount.

it's retail, though. the discount is cool, but you have to put up with the same crap that anyone working in retail has to put up with.

That's the stuff I outlined in my post.

for me, the pay was fair, but the low pay didn't even matter b/c of the awesome discount (10% above cost i think). The worst part of the job are those warranties. Luckily, i was good at selling them and there are a bunch of tricks to get somebody to buy them, but if you can't sell them, don't expect to get hours.

That's how messed up it is. You shouldn't have to trick the customer into purchasing a Warranty.

I worked in the PCHO (PC's, Home Office) department a couple years back. I was expected to lie, rip customers off, etc. I would suggest against it if you have any morals.

i know two people in BB... one works in the media dept.. the eaiest one. (Music/Games/Movies) and the other works in the electrionic tv dept.. which is a nightmare cause people ask a billion questions.
if you can deal with customers and push warranties then it should be ok.

I work at Staples which doesn't have nearly as much electronic stuff as Best Buy, and I hate pushing warranties. That's the worst part of the job. I like my coworkers, I like helping the customers, but I feel so bad about making them buy warranties, which I ain't very good at anyways, especially since I am only a cashier. I even have to ask for warranties on electric pencil sharpeners. Our customer service is based on the numbers of warranties that we sell. If you can't deal with people and this crazy numbers game then DON"T work retail. You'll hate your job like I do.

Yes and yes.

You become the managements hourly-paid bitch who must meet goals or else you could lose your job all while they receive profit sharing, etc.

If you like being lumped in with the likes of door-to-door salesman, used car dealers, and pedophiles, go ahead and work for BB.

I worked there for a month...didn't like the hours (8pm-1am)I was given because I didn't pester the customer with warranties, though they have said "No" numerous times. The management believes that we shouldn't sell something that didn't come with a warranty.

I interviewed there, and the break room was filled with unhappy miserable workers and signs promoting the extended warranties.

I'd rather work for someplace where you don't have to lie and trick customers to keep your job

So, do you get commissions on warranties, or do the managers "steal" that from you after you do all their dirty work? (A: Managers get all the incentives.)

It seems to me that the only incentive you have for selling them is not getting hassled or fired. If it turns out you're actually good at sales, you do yourself no favor working at "we don't make commission" Best Buy.

They have contests every so often, but mainly it is job security...if you don't sell them, they will find a reason to fire you.

Here's the thing

tech bench > home audio > appliances > all else > video > computers > media

Tech bench or home audio are the ONLY dept's I would work in. (I work 4 hours every other week at the tech bench) the discount is 5% above cost. WELL worth it for the discount.

You have to deal with HS drama though, as 80% of the people who work there are 17 or 18.

yeah, how can anyone here push an overpriced warrenty on a customer when we spend countless hours in the hot deals forum trying to save money every week. That's one reason why I decided not to even bother with Excel/Vartech (the telecommunications company sort of like a pyramid scheme where the only real plausible way of earning a paycheck is by selling overpriced telecommunication services to your family, friends, and your friends families).
