Would you turn down a position if the pay was low (mid 30s or so)? Especially in a high cost area like DC?

If you had the chance to get a much better paying job, yes.

Yep. Not only is the pay bad, but the bureaucracy at the FBI will probably drive you insane.

If that's what I wanted to do then I would most certainly not turn down the offer. What kind of job are we talking about btw?

You would be living in poverty making $35k a year in DC. The only thing that would set you apart from the masses of poor there is that you'd have a gun.

In fact, $35k isn't nearly enough to be a FBI agent anywhere in this country. Consider the fact that you'll be working more than 40 hours a week, might have to move around, have to have nice clothes to wear to work, etc.

I don't see how we can justify paying these guys $35k a year, IMO they should start at $50k and be able to hit ~$95k within 5-8 years.

It depends on what you want to do and you need to start somewhere. But you might be better off starting as a cop if the pay is significantly more, then get into the FBI later at a higher pay grade.

<-- doesn't know what he's talking about but it sounds good.

Did you ask them how often promotions are handed out for your specific position?

You should check on the possible benefits you would be eligible to receive at the department. I suspect there's more to it than the $35K.

Think about it, you could investigate lots of cool alien invasions not to mention you would get to meet Mulder.

It looks interesting enough, the early retirement is quite nice, and they would pay for the travel expenses and whatnot. Why don't you give it a try? Is there anything you could bring up against it aside from the payment? How old are you anyway? If you are young, you could build a nice career there at the FBI it seems. Promotion ftw.

So have you actually been offered a job? It's a pretty lengthy and difficult process to get hired, from what I've heard; there's lots of competition.

I received a Conditional Offer, I still have to go through a Background Investigation/Polygraph.
