last night was my second night on midnights and being a total night person im handling it awesome except that when i come home i dont wanna go to bed yet, i wanna stay up and do stuff but its so early that the stores that i wanna go and do my errands at arent open yet or whatever and nobody is on icq to talk to cuz all my friends are either working days or lazy bums.

so my question is to those with experience with working midnights: is it better to stay up and do stuff when i get home then sleep and get up for work OR sleep when i get home from work and get up for a while and do stuff before going to work?

does that make sense?

I've been working graveyard for over 10 years, and in my experience, it doesn't matter, you're still screwed. 8-(

The world is built around gross day people *blech* and us night people are just pretty much shafted no matter what we try.

Myself, I get home around 8am, so it's timed just right to do what I have to do that day, then sleep. I usually go to sleep around 9-10am and get up again around 6pm so I can relax and play around a little. Really depends on your area and your schedule.

heh..when i first started at kmart, i was on the graveyard shift for about two months. I started at 10pm and got off work around 6:30am. Some days i didn't think i'd be able to make it on the drive home, and other days i wasn't tired until it was time to get ready for work again.

BUT...i find it best to get some sleep right when you get home, then around 2:30/3:00ish get your daily stuff done while the stores are still open.

I've never worked midnights but I wake up very early to be in by 6 or 7am depending on the day. Getting plenty of rest beforehand and caffeine are the the key.

I worked midnights for about a year, then decided to get my ass to college, and I always found it better to go to sleep when I got home.

I work 10pm-6:30am... my routine is usually stay up until 11 or 12, sleep til 9pm, get up and go to work.

i work 4pm-12:30am... feel bad becase my g/f works 8am-4pm, so to spend time together she has to wake up about 1am when i come over, she doesnt sleep well nowadays... i usually stay up until 5-6am, sleep until 1pm or so

I work 2230-0630. My sleeping schedule seems to vary a lot. Somedays I'll sleep as soon as I get home, somedays i wait until noon or 1pm.

For my weekend, I stay up all day Friday and don't sleep until that night, so I'm on a normal schedule for a couple days, and then just take a quick 3 hour nap before work sunday night and I'm good to go.

Sounds a LOT like what I do. Right now I'm off for 2 nights..Tues & Wed night..I'll stay up all day today, go to bed around 9 or so, get up early, then do the same til I have to work... that evening I'll take a nap til I gotta go in.

I work 4pm-12am, and I usually go to sleep around 4am and get up around 1pm.

I have a meeting early today, so that would explain why i'm up now.

Same schedule here. 11pm-7am. Sun-Thu. Except I get mandatory overtime every other week on Saturday nights (another 8 hours, oh the joy of Retail Management).

I find I work best if I stay up through the morning, then sleep til a few hours before I go to work. Doesn't always work, I have class 6pm-9pm two days a week. But I've been doing it for almost ten years. Don't work overnights too long though. It really messes your body up. I'm trying dearly to get off them (why I'm going to school).

Just don't work on your computer when you get home in the morning (see my post over in General Hardware about burning up my RAM last week)...
