I had a brain fart and put public sector. I work in the private sector but the construction job I work on is run through the Corps of Engineers which is the public sector.

I'm at work, they aren't. Lazy SOBs!

Pretty much everyone has to work. Only people who get it off are Gov, State workers, bank employees, and school is out. That is about the extent of it. Most businesses do not honor it as a day off.

Private sector, working today.

At least the roads were pretty clear.

Ah man, I slept in a little this morning. Now I'm going to have an espresso or two, not in a hurry to run to catch the metro. Maybe an afternoon nap later on...

So those with the day off... whats the purpose? How do you celebrate/remember the man? I just think its stupid to get days off that are not taken for what they are intended... whether they be MLK day, Presidents day, Christmas... anything.

I celebrate by doing very little and watching Sportscenter most of the morning. Seriously, though, in college my university was giving it off on a trial basis starting my sophomore year. They had a bunch of things to do that day related to civil rights, etc. If attendance to those dipped for lack of interest, they didn't have that day off the following year. It was actually pretty interesting to get some speakers in who were involved in the 60's. They definitely gave you a perspective that you didn't get in your gen ed history course.

Now I'll probably follow a path of curiosity in Wikipedia. I do that a lot with the current events of the day anyway. It's not necessarily because I feel obligated to do that because it's MLK day, but it's something that I do pretty much every day on some topic related to historical events that happened on that date in the past.

Most people do not celebrate or remember the reason for the day off. Most people just celebrate the day off.

I think Thanksgiving is sufficiently celebrated/remembered, though most people's knowledge of it is historically inaccurate.

Independence Day seems to be sufficiently celebrated/remembered.

New Years is clearly over-celebrated.

Personally, the only common holiday that I wish was celebrated/remembered more is Memorial Day (and, I guess Veterans Day - What is the difference?).

Rest of the days are not worth "celebrating" for political, historical or religious reasons (but I do appreciate the days off):

Martin Luther King
President’s Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Christmas

Working. Private sector

I'm not fussed over it - The day off is nice, but I really only have the patience/tolerance/enthusiasm for a few holidays. Thanksgiving (Food, Booze, Football, and naps on the couch 4TW!),
Christmas is mandatory - (and hidden for your cock sucking bastards who hate it, so I don't have to hear your whining)
, and the 4th of July (alcohol, open flames, and explosives - What's not to like!!).

It would be silly for us to be closed. If education stopped I think MLK would rise from the dead and eat our brains.

Technically I am retired, though I still do some Contract work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Figured today was a sure bet at not having to work, but got an E-mail early this AM that a Contractor Safety Program needed to be submitted Tuesday morning!
Oh well, I'm nearly done, although I'm billing for the entire day at Double my rate as per our Contract.

Working, but get 8 hours of holiday pay, plus holiday OT for the hours I work. Not such a bad deal.

I don't mind working on federal holidays... makes the commute an absolutely breeze in the metro DC area. Mmmmm.... smooooooth sailing even at 8:30 this morning. I usually leave at 5:15 AM to avoid the traffic.

We get the day "off" but work it. It is given to us along with many of the other federal holidays at the end of the year so we have off between Christmas and New Years.
