Working with a partition?

I made a 25gb partition for the OS. The desktop that I can see is the one on the C: partition, right?

Where would I put stuff like video codes such as xvid and how do I make the default download and install directory E:?

Is it possible to have the desktop be affiliated with the E: part of the drive or is that restricted to the partition on which the OS is installed?

I'm assuming the advantage of having a partition like this is to be able to format the OS while keeping everything intact on the other one? Sounds cool

P.S. Some thing keeps popping up in my taskbar telling me that I'm able to "Safely remove hardware" and then it gives me a choice to "stop" either my C: or E: drive. I don't want this. Why is it asking me to do this and how do I stop it?

thanks

Assuming your working with XP

"The desktop that I can see is the one on the C: partition, right?"
Normally yes

"Where would I put stuff like video codes such as xvid"
Windows's "Documents" folder & make or use the "Video" folder I suppose unless you mean codec then I don't know. I personally use a self-executing program to install codecs.

"how do I make the default download and install directory E:?"
Don't know or remember (Maybe the last directory you download into is what XP uses next time)

"Is it possible to have the desktop be affiliated with the E: part of the drive or is that restricted to the partition on which the OS is installed?"
Restricted to OS

"I'm assuming the advantage of having a partition like this is to be able to format the OS while keeping everything intact on the other one?"
Affirmative

"Some thing keeps popping up in my taskbar telling me that I'm able to "Safely remove hardware" and then it gives me a choice to "stop" either my C: or E: drive. I don't want this. Why is it asking me to do this and how do I stop it?"
It's XP's way off ticking you off, ... j/k . It's suppose to be a feature in Windows that allows you to safely remove peripherals/hotswappable devices e.g. USB connected cable modems or the like without the need to shutdown Windows.

To prevent from popping up I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you can disable it by going into
[Start Menu > Search > Change preferences > "Select" Don't show balloon tips]

As for the icon on the taskbar itself AFAIK the only way to get rid of it would be to make it hidden
[Right-click taskbar to open up menu > Properties > select "Hide inactive icons" and click on the "customize" button > click on "Safely Remove hardware" and under behavior change it to "always hide"]

Alrite, thanks for the help. And yes I did mean codecs. I just find it funny that it's telling me that it's safe to remove my harddrive
