Working with a racist colleague

I usually get along with just about everyone I work with and if I don't I usually don't make much of it. Recently though we hired a guy who turned out to be fairly racist. This took me by surprise more than usual because the guy is African American. At first I didn't think much of what he said. He talked a fair amount about disliking the fact that the company had been bought out by the Japanese and disliking all the jobs that are outsourced overseas. This in and of itself didn't mean anything but I started to get a bit uncomfortable after a while so I decided to talk with him about the subject a bit and see where it went. That's when he mentioned the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour, 'once you invite someone into your back yard', 'got to watch your back' etc etc... paranoid sounding stuff. I've also noticed that he belittles many of our other employees, who are largely Asian. Once I mentioned that I was 1/2 Chinese he stopped talking about that stuff with me. I'm guessing since I don't look 1/2 Asian he felt he could mention these things with me. I believe that our manager is considering firing the guy, not for these reasons but because he's a slow worker and not catching on. I'm not trying to argue that African Americans can't be racist but whenever I encounter it in someone who is non-Caucasian I'm always thrown for a loop. Anyone else have similar experiences?

I'm not trying to argue that minorities are racist and get away with it, I know those responses are coming. The guy just comes across as extremely ignorant to me. I has other problems with his job and life in general I think. He's probably just another guy who blames his problems on others. He's slow as hell and takes forever to lean his job but tends to blame others for these problems.

Update:
Well that's the end of that. He didn't show up for work today, no warning, no call just didn't show up. He called in sick yesterday and I found someone to cover for him but asked him to come in today if he could. Looks like he finally got fed up and got a job somewhere else.

You broke my #1 rule- don't talk to people. It's like turning over a rock in the forest...you never know what's underneath and it might be really scary.

So he wasn't a "racist" with you when he thought you were just a regular white guy?

You should have just told him you were an Earthling. You can't be racist about that because from that point of view, we are all in the same boat.

It is interesting how minorities can get much more of a free pass in the US when it comes to racism, isn't it?

Sorry what? I look like a regular white guy, or almost so, but am in fact 1/2 chinese. Before I told him I was 1/2 Chinese he mentioned these things. Then stopped when I told him.

Sounds like the answer to this was yes since as soon as he found out you were half Chinese he figured you would be offended & stopped.

Considering that democratic senators have been members of the KKK, I think you meant Democrat.

Nice try though.

No, you can't be racist about that because "earthling" is not a race.

No. And even if that isn't a word (which I don't think it is), I still knew what you meant.

Or maybe a Planetist? I don't care what color, gender, creed, etc you are. The only thing worth discriminating against is stupidity.

In a minor way you are doing the same thing he does. You say you are "thrown for a loop" because you encountered some predjudices and stereotypes coming from someone who is "non-Caucasian" which implies that you have your own stereotypes and predjudices that caucasians are by definition racist. In reality, unless he believes that he is superior to Asians or anyone else by virtue of his race, at most he is doing nothing more than expressing ignorance and predjudice.

LOL...no. You need to get out more. I've encountered racists of pretty much every color.

I was surprised when I moved up to Canada how many racist people there are up here. Not really surprised I guess, but considering how much posturing Canadians tend to do about how much better they are than Americans, I guess it was just a surprise to come up and find out that there's a large number of people who are not just mildly racist, but openly so. Hell, last place I worked at about 75% of the guys were blatently racist, and proud of it. Made me feel right at home.

Relax... he was saying that stuff to your other half.
