Ive been riding the stationary bike about 30-45 minutes per day for cardio and fat burning exercise. I set it to adjust the resistance to keep my heart rate at 150 BPM (i'm 22), usually i end up at about a 20mph pace. While my heart rate stays at 150, i dont have to increase my breathing anymore than I am just sitting at the computer right now. Does this mean Im not really going to be doing any worthwhile exercise or does it not matter?

You're just getting into better shape. Try increasing the intensity of your workout.

I can't imagine why you're breathing isn't becoming more laboured, but as long as your heart rate is up you're doing fine. More importantly you need to lift weights if you want to lose fat.

You can lose fat by doing cardio too.

Probably means that your lungs are currently much more efficient than your heart. Keep exercising and your heart will get stronger, then you'll start breathing harder.

Working out is one thing, eating is another. If you are not eating well (balenced, good amounts of fiber and protein, not so much fats or carbs) you will lose the fat.

You need to eat fat to burn fat (healthy fat). Your train of thoughts belong in 1980s.

edit: I recommend doing HIIT for cardio. Probably one of the most efficient way to burn fat.

high intensity interval training

it's like 30 seconds of sprint, 30 seconds of walking, 30 seconds of sprint, etc. theory being that you can get an effective cardio workout without the long extended exercises like jogging.

When doing this, how long do you go for? Until tired?

Say you are used to running 30 min, how long would you do the run/walk intervals for?

150 bpm is kind of low for full out exertion, but any cardio is better than none.

150 would be like a slow jog.

Try running a few miles and see if the exertion is comparable.

i'm no expert in HIIT, but i'm sure there are folks here who have done it who can elaborate.

i'm used to jogging for long periods, but even when i tried this out just to see how hard it was, it kicked my ass. i play basketball, so something like HIIT is a better workout for me.

You can lose fat by doing cardio too.

But you will lose more fat by adding weight training to a cardio routine..

So true, however -- if you lift weights ALSO, you'll become toned and lose weight faster. When you lift weights, your muscles will burn fat even after a workout for a certain period of time.....
