What do you drink when you work out? Specifically while you are working out.

I'm planning on doing some reading about what to drink. Just looking for more opinions.

Just water. Unless i'm doing a distance run in which I'm going to pop a few energy blocks and wash down with water for intra-race fuel.

I do a mix of blue Gatorade powder and vanilla whey. Typically 40-60g carbs and 20-30g protein intra-workout. Depending on what your goals are, and experience level, this may not be necessary.

Interesting. I've never seen a 4hr rule until you pointed that out, hightree. The usual rule that I hear is 90 mins. I'll have to keep digging.

I drink mineral water. It's tasty and light. You may need sport drinks in prolonged exercise (>4 hours = marathon) when it is not comfortable to eat something (and thus consume some sodium).

Otherwise you do not need nothing (sodium, potassium, magnesium...) except plain water.

He contradicts himself by posting a link that says:

Fatigue can be reduced by adding carbohydrate to the fluids consumed so that 30–60 g of rapidly absorbed carbohydrate are ingested throughout each hour of an athletic event.

That seems much more consistent to what I've read so far than once every four hours. It seems like the consensus in endurance fitness is something every hour for any activity lasting 90 minutes or longer. And that something should vary from person to person based on sweat levels - if you are a heavy sweater, might be more sport drink and less water; sweat less, more water and less sport drink.

I'll keep digging.

I can't convince myself that gatorade is the best choice either though. It just doesnt sit right with me that such a commercially successful product is actually the right product. Something like HEED seems like it would be better.. but I'll keep reading!

Yeah I'm more in the 30 minute window but I do smaller doses. The cliff blocks I use are 3 for 100 calories. I'll do two every 4 miles or so when running.

I'll pop two before the race, two at mile 4, then 8 and 12. They are easier for me to eat while running and don't have that nasty sludge to them that gels seem to have. Plus I seem to do better with smaller amounts more frequent than more amounts less frequent.

Better question is why the person is drinking a gallon of water for a 2hr workout and how they arrived at the conclusion they needed to drink a gallon of water during there workout.

Hydrate properly before you work out, drink like a normal person between sets and 32oz bottle will do you fine for a normal 1 hour work out. Recommendation is usually 8oz every 15 minutes so if your gymtastic sweaty pig ass is going like gangbusters for 2 hours a 64oz bottle is what you should be carrying.

For super high intensity, no breaks, sweating like a pig workouts where loss rates are 40oz+ an hour but at that point you should be doing some analysis on what your water intake should be vs blindly taking swigs (unless you want start messing with sodium levels) from a gallon container.


Of course this all academic bullshit on my end since I only join gyms with water fountains.

Every one of these are minimums and do not address weight. I am sure a 5'9" 145 pound runner has a bit of a different requirement than a 6'1" 280 pound weight lifter. There was only one mention of a max and that was 3 gallons within a 24 hour span. But hell I've drank more beer then that on top of 2 gallons of water for days on end when I was younger. But seriously I will chat with this to my Dr. on my next visit. If I'm drinking to much water I should cut back, but I don't know where I would.

HEY!! I just noticed the noob remark. I spent a lot of my life in a bottle and then a lot of it repairing the damage done while in that bottle. The last 3 years have been great, and I would have never gotten back into it had my son not gone out for football.

Usually the noob brigade at the gym carrying around gallon jugs with the permanently attached weightlifting belt (cuz it helps with muh curls brah!!) help inspire me to say douchebag because they are the ones are traveling in bro packs leaving plates lying all over the place.

25 years of gym ratting + a couple of years running turned me all cranky and argumentative and crap.
