I have been looking at these vids, because as a couple, getting to the gym is a huge commitment and if we could do something at home together it will be easier to manage the time.
Thoughts?

I have. I did P90X and Insanity. Both produced the expected results. My wife has tried them but has never committed to it. Too intense for her.

Tony Horton is.... well.. he's one of a kind.

yeah I'd be doing something like piyo with her. No need in discouraging her right out of the gate. It is exactly what I don't want.

Generally speaking, they're not bad. I recommend them to people that are able to be conscious of their own form. It is very easy to do the movements wrong, and even if you do them "right" you're unlikely to be doing them the way a PT would have you do them. But for Joe Couchgroove, pick something else. Too easy to get hurt.

well, if you have no workout experience, get a personal trainer. they'll show you how to do the moves correctly to avoid injuring yourself and teach you and guide you.

This so much as long as they're knowledgeable. 100 years ago the football coaches tossed us in the weight room and said hit it. I have long term injuries because of doing shit the wrong way/sloppily for a long time. At our age, (you and me), we can't afford to add to the list.

My PT people have a gym in their facility and will work with you/explain why...for a price. Today, it's pretty small potatoes compared to the ice pick I get when trying to even do a pushup.

That's not practical for many people.
It's not, for sure, but "basic" stuff like small muscle functions are something I never heard about until I paid a guy.

Posted in Z's thread, I'm doing 5lbs, many sets, many different ways just for the bicep rehab. It really sucks and I skip some but I do, finally, get the value.

How's the weight loss?

Yeah. its expensive. Some gyms offer courses or weight room guides or stuff that isn't PT but can still help. Youtube can be helpful (and can also be a disaster - find someone reputable). And if you decide to just jump in, do substantially less than you think you can until you know what you're doing. If you want to curl 15 pounds, pick up 5s instead. That kind of thing. If you're just getting off the couch, your muscles are weak as hell - no offense intended. its just how it is. weak muscles doing too much leads to injury.

this is true of all fitness, not just lifting. cycling, swimming, running, etc. too and those sports are more my background than lifting. i don't consider myself a lifter.

are you new to fitness? what are your goals?

Like cbrunny said, it will depend on your goals. If you just want to do some bodyweight stuff and get in better shape, sure that will work. If you have injuries or things preventing you from doing the workouts like mobility issues, than you need help.

I've been going to a weightlifting gym for a little over a year now and I never would have believed how much help I needed. I'm just recently starting to fully commit and the difference is staggering. If you can find a gym with trainers that will help you with whatever you need, it goes a long way. I don't pay for sessions, but I do pay $200 per month for unlimited access. It's worth it for me. You have to work up to it though, i'm now going 6 days a week and sometimes multiple classes a day since they offer mobility and form classes to help make sure you can do the movements correctly and safely.

It's a lot of money and a few years ago when I had my $30 24hour fitness membership I would have thought I was crazy. But it's your health, your body, you only get one. I'm finally working through things i've dealt with my whole life without realizing how much impact they really had.

It's not necessarily the money, it's the time commitment. The topic was home workout videos because of the time and possibility of actually following through, as a couple. As a couple is right there in the OP, guys. I know that everybody wants to preach it, but please address the OP as it is.
My own health is ultimately and always my personal commitment. However, if I can work alongside my spouse in a benefical program at home, rather than the old veg out on the couch, it is a win in my book.
Am I new to fitness? In relative terms, yes. I've done physical work my whole life, but as you get older, that's not enough. Coupled with periods of lack of work, apathy, and bad diet I got way out of shape. That's all in the past for me, but once again I digress from the topic of workout vids.

Well, since my comments are apparently off topic... *worlds largest eyeroll*.... based on your comments in this thread I do not recommend doing workout videos at home. Since your focus is more on spending time with your partner with a focus on health, there are other ways to do that which I'd recommend. But since those are also off topic, I'll just leave it there and see myself out. Good luck!

thanks. So far I have one "don't do it, I did it but don't do it" from you, and not much else. Maybe somebody else has tried them.

i usually tell my out-of-shape friends to look into T25 with Shaun T. it's only 25 minutes and there's a person that does modified movements in case the regular movements are too intense/high-impact. just another home workout video to consider.

i've done insanity and you definitely don't wanna do that.

I did P90X way back in like 2007 when deployed and didn't have anything else. I remember a friend doing the ab thing and not being able to stand up straight the next day because his stomach was so tight, was funny. The thing with it is, you have to put out. If you slack off, as with any workout, you don't get back much.

Do you and your wife just not like the gym? My wife and I go, we call it our 'gym date'. A time to get away from the kids and be alone. We don't actually workout with each other except for a few things like squats and such. Our gym won't watch the baby till he's 6 months, and just going on 4. So we have someone watch him, her dad, our oldest, etc. It's nice to get away and have some alone time.

I like the gym OK. Right now her work stress level is off the charts, and planning a gym day just makes it worse. We all know that workouts are great stress relievers, but you know where I am coming from. Hey Cbrunny, sorry if I came off snide and ungrateful, I'm reaching for what is possible right now. This probably should be ln love and relationships

I've got P90x Original, P90x3 and Rushfit.

Between the three, there's like 30 different workouts. And of those three, Rushfit has 3 of my 5 favorite ones. The exercises in Rushfit are easy to learn, they do not require a set of dumbells more than 10-15 pounds and do not require any other equipment like bands or pullup bars. The exercises are mostly functional, compound movements that focus on core strength and balance more than pure power or size.

The core strength, endurance and full body conditioning workouts in the Rushfit set are a great staple for a weekly workout. Add in some cardio (exercise bike, treadmill, walking, running ,ect) and you've got an easy to do, well balanced workout.

P90x (original) is a much more complete home workout system. But it's an incredibly dedicated model and requires a lot more equipment and space to do it. P90x3 is a watered down version of the original with a few good workouts (Warrior & Challenge) but otherwise is more of a gimmick and I wasn't as happy with the series.

My guess is you have a smartphone?

I use Jefit. I really like it because you can download workouts that are already setup. They have beginner, intermediate and advanced. For instance, I went with beginner bodybuilding. I'm going MWF and S. Just started going TH. Play with the app and see what works best for you and your girl. They even have couple workouts as well.

The key is to be consistent. Just get in the gym You're going to fail as well. That will happen and it will get better with time.

Use Jefit with MyFitnessPal. Both are free. MyFitnessPal is a calorie tracker. I use both together. Good stuff.

Good luck.

thanks Mai, I already use myfitnesspal. IT is decent, but I'd like to choose how the frequent and recent foods are displayed. It is really willy-nilly, not alpha or anything. If you have a varied diet, searching out your common foods is far too tedious in this day and age.
